Tour Overview

Join us on the first Sketching Tour of the Calabria region, in Southern Italy. This is the Goinitaly small group tour to the undiscovered beautiful region of Calabria, the toe of Italy’s boot. This Southern Italian region is famous for its spicy and robust cuisine, emphasising powerful ingredients like garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and red-hot chilli peppers and was the cradle of Magna Graecia and land of ancient settlements, is full of splendid churches, monasteries, castles, palaces and towns where age-old traditions still survive. We will discover places that were once part of the Grand Tour from the 16th to 19th centuries. Artists, painters, musicians, writers, and aristocrats travelled by foot, horse, and carriage to explore the Calabrian region of Italy. We will be visiting some fascinating historical and ancient towns and villages, over our time together, with great spots for sketching every turn… If you’re not a sketcher but fascinated with Italy, its history and everything to do with the food, the people, the language, then this tour is also for you. Plenty of time to explore while we sketch. This itinerary put together perfectly a sightseeing and cultural tour with an artistic experience, managed perfectly by your tutor Erin Hill. Meditative. Relaxing. Pure joy. A lovely sense of wellbeing. Travel Sketching teaches you to quickly put down what you see around you and move on. All there in your bag, sketchbook, pen, watercolours, ready anytime. You’re creating your own sketch journal – a lovely memory of places you love. Most people like the idea of being able to paint and draw, but have been afraid to pursue it. However, even if you have little experience, or have never been encouraged, this is definitely for you. We start at the beginning, and we take you step by step on the journey. I’ve developed a simple and therapeutic way to guide you to become a confident and passionate sketcher and to use watercolours. We guide you to be creating your own impressions, in your own style and to have loads of enjoyment as you progress. We sketch outside and inside. You’ll be sketching those little moments which are important to you. It becomes part of your life. Beginners to Advanced. Absolutely everybody can learn to sketch. Over the days you will: - Learn travel sketching techniques, from quick planning sketches to creating larger watercolour sketches in your sketchbook - Develop your observational skills, and learn to sketch what you see. - Learn to layer your colours and get bright clear colour with a limited palette - Learn to sketch people, places, flora and fauna, water and sea, so that your sketchbooks can truly reflect your travels. - Learn compositional techniques for successful travel sketchbooks. Puglia, Calabria & Sorrento

23-Oct-2021

Words are inadequate to express our fantastic tour of Puglia with GoinItaly. If you have the opportunity, do not hesitate to take this tour; you will enjoy every bit of it. Everything was outstanding; the accommodations, restaurants and sightseeing, but most especially Gaetano, our tour leader. He knows and loves Italy and shared it with us in a very warm and friendly manner. He did all he could to make this tour the most enjoyable and unforgettable. It was beautiful and delicious! After the tour, we extended our trip from Puglia to Sorrento by way of Calabria. Gaetano took care of everything, and he took us to places off the beaten track that one does not usually get to see. Magnificent sights, delicious meals and charming people- Italy is wonderful and Gaetano shows it to you. He knows the places to go. He also graciously arranged visits to our families’ hometowns. His engaging personality and willingness to go the extra step made these side trips so much fun and extremely memorable. After this wonderful experience, I would encourage anyone to use GoinItaly and have Gaetano plan your tour. You will have the trip of a lifetime.

Puglia & Calabria Tours

24-Sep-2021

I can not make enough complimentary remarks about Gaetano and GoinItaly Tours. After a superbly guided tour of Puglia with GoinItaly Tours, my friend and I were planning a few weeks to travel around other parts of Calabria and Campania by ourselves. Our experience on this first leg had been so enjoyable that we asked Gaetano, for a reasonable cost, to escort us on our side trip. He gave us excellent information everywhere we went, took us to very interesting places and ate at charming, off-the-beaten-path restaurants. We even stopped in Basilicata. But probably the highlight and best adventure was when he accompanied us to our grandfathers' ancestral towns in Campania, where he acted as translator while we enjoyed experiencing our heritage. I have travelled to Italy a number of times, but this was the first formal tour I ever took in Italy. If I should be lucky enough to visit again, I will surely travel with GoinItaly Tours.
