Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1 - London to Cologne

After meeting at London St Pancras, we board the Eurostar to
Brussels. Here we change trains, travelling to Cologne where we
stay overnight.

Day 2 - St Johann

On Day 2, we join the direct service to
Munich, before we change trains for Wörgl. We transfer by coach to
St Johann in Tirol, nestled in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps.

Day 3 - Free time in St Johann

Day 3 is free to settle in. You might like
to start exploring beautiful St Johann in Tirol. Wander past
traditional Alpine buildings, adorned with colourful flower boxes
and congregated around the quaint Maria Himmellfahrt church. You
could also visit the local museum detailing the history of the
region.

Day 4 - The High Alpine Road

We drive to Hohe Tauern National Park for one of the highlights
of our holiday, a journey along the superb Grossglockner High
Alpine Road. Travelling north into nearby Salzkammergut by coach,
we're greeted with fantastic views of plunging ravines, glacial
lakes, vibrant meadows and rugged peaks as we traverse the snaking
road, crowned by Austria's highest mountain and glacier of the same
name, the majestic Grossglockner. The route is dotted with stopping
points, so there will be plenty of time to admire the views. At the
end of the road is the enchanting village of Heiligenblut, where we
have free time. Home to the Gothic St Vinzenz pilgrimage church,
Heiligenblut is also the site of the only gold-digging settlement
in the Alps.

Day 5 - Zillertalbahn Railway

Day 5 begins with a coach transfer to
Jenbach, where we join the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn Railway.
First opened in 1902, we travel in beautifully restored carriages,
enjoying a 19-mile steam-hauled* journey through the dramatic
Ziller Valley. Our route takes us past lush green pastures and
remote villages of half-timbered houses and traditional chalets, as
we make our way to picturesque Mayrhofen, at the head of the
valley. Here you're free to explore the charming streets lined with
pretty pavement cafés and unique shops. Alternatively, take a cable
car higher into the mountains and enjoy the panoramic vistas from
the summit before we return to St Johann.

*Steam-hauled where possible.

Day 6 - Lake Zell

We catch the train to Zell am See, a beautiful town set in an
idyllic location between Lake Zell and Hohe Tauern National Park.
We take to the water with a relaxing boat trip across the
sapphire-blue waters, a great way to admire the lush forests,
undulating hills, and towering mountains beyond. Back on dry land,
the rest of your day is free to explore. Perhaps visit the historic
centre, relax in one of the many pavement cafés, or take a cable
car up the Schmittenhöhe Mountain and admire the wonderful views
from the summit.

Day 7 - Salzburg

Day 7 takes us to Salzburg, one of
Austria's best-loved cities. On arrival, we enjoy a guided tour,
seeing the iconic Getreidegasse, the Residenz, and the magnificent
Mirabell Gardens.

With the rest of the day free, you could explore the Old Town.
Here you'll find Hohensalzburg Fortress, accessible both on foot
and by funicular. This part of the city is also home to the
ancestral home of Salzburg's most famous son, Mozart, as well as
the refreshing beer-brewing museum.

Day 8 - Cologne

We return to Wörgl and travel by rail to Munich, continuing to
Cologne where we stay overnight.

Day 9 - London

We catch the train to Brussels on Day 9.
From here, we take the Eurostar back to London St Pancras.
