Then, in the afternoon, we will visit the Inka Museum, home of thousands of years of Andean culture. Here we will become more familiar with the origins and beginnings of Andean civilizations.

Continuing with the tour, we will move onto the temple of Qoricancha. Above all, it’s famous Sun Temple of the ancient Inca capital, that was and remained the pinnacle of organization, architecture, and religion of Inka civilization. During its construction, they had already achieved the most significant advances of their time, and this temple may have been the exact representation of the center, or “Navel of the World”. Therefore, the center of the world, as dictated by the pre-hispanic Andean cosmovision.

Here we can admire the well-preserved Inka walls of the main square as well as the many altars. We will also visit the beautiful colonial church, unique for its interior artwork and imagery. Moving on we will participate in a wonderful introduction and learning experience of the art of Andean textiles; will become acquainted with the wisdom of Andean weavings as maintained since long before Inka times.
In the afternoon we will visit Moray, an ancient construction designed for agricultural investigations and studies of different crops in a range of altitudes. Here the many concentric "rings" of terraces produce a fine gradient of micro-climates; the warmth of the lowest central ring slowly dissapates as the rings ascend outward and upward, creating reductions in temperatures until reaching the ground-level norm.

Usually, we take the bus at around 1:00 pm. The bus ride takes around 25 minutes and your guides will give you the ticket. Check out our Q&As

  • Is the trek difficult? Do I need to be in good physical condition?

All our treks (Inka Trail, Salkantay, Ausangate, Lares, etc) are moderately difficult, lengthy, and traverse rough mountain terrain. We kindly recommend that if you plan to conquer any of these routes treks to Machu Picchu travel to be in relatively good physical condition, plus acclimatization.

  • Are hiking sticks or poles necessary?

For this trek more than any other, we do recommend hiking sticks, especially for those with any known knee problems. Above all, the poles will assist your balance and reduce the impact on your knees while you are doing the Cusco & Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Inkayni Peru Tours will rent hiking sticks for $15

  • Where do I have to be the morning of the start of my trek and where will I finish at the end?

We will pick you up from your hotel to begin your trek, and upon finishing, we will also leave you at your hotel.

  • What is the weather like during the trek?

The best time for making the trek with good weather is between April – October when there are minimal rainfall and clear skies. The driest months are June – August, which is winter in the Andes. January to March is summer in Peru, which means the rainy season for Cusco and especially the Salkantay trek tour, which is located mostly in the tropical cloud forest.

  • Where I can store my baggage that I don't need during the trek?

Any baggage that is not necessary for your trek may be stored in your hotel in Cusco (most hotels offer this service free of charge). Therefore, In the case that your hotel may not provide this service, we will store your baggage safely in our office free of charge.

  • What is the maximum group size?

We need a minimum of 2 people and the maximum can be 12 - 15 people.

  • I have a food allergy. May I still participate?

Every day we receive many clients with food allergies to nuts, wheat, etc. Please inform us in detail of your condition upon making your reservation for the Salkantay trekking Cusco – trek to Machu Picchu. We kindly ask that you declare the severity of your reaction and any medication that you take in case of an emergency. If your allergy is severe, we ask that you be accompanied by a friend or individual conscious and fully responsible for your situation and ready with any medication.

  • What should we pack?

Peru is a diverse country in natural and cultural resources so you only need a passport to enter the country and take some precautions that will help you to enjoy the wealth of this beautiful land.

  • Do I need a Visa to enter Peru?

With a few exceptions (notably some Asian, African and Communist countries), Visa are not requiered for travelers entering Peru. Tourist are permited a 30 to 90 day stay, wich is stamped into their passports and onto a turist card called Tarjeta Andina de Migracion “TAM”(Andean Immigration card), that you must return upon leaving the country. Be careful not to lose your tourist card, or you will have to queue at immigration office (oficina de migraciones), also simply known as migraciones to get a replacement card. It is a good idea to carry your passport and TAM on your pocket at all times especially when traveling in remote areas, for example: it is required by law on the Inca Trail. For security get a photocopy of both documents and keep them in a separate place form the originals.

  • What is the time difference between the United States and Peru?

Peru is five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). It is the same as Eastern Standard Time (EST) in North America. Daylight Saving Time (DST) is not used in Peru, so add an hour to all of these times between the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October.

  • What are the standars plugs?

Electrical current is 220V, 60HZ AC, Standard outlets accep round prongs, but many places will have dual-voltage outlets which take flat prongs. Even so, you may need and adapter with a built-in surge protector.

  • Phone Calls

Public pay phones operated by Telefonica-Peru (www.telefonica.com.pe) or Claro-Perú (www.claro.com.pe) are available on the street even in small towns. Most pay phones work with phone cards which can be purchased at supermarkets and groceries. Often internet cafes have private phone booths with ¨net-to-phone¨ and ¨net-to-net¨ capabilities (such as skype), where you can talk for pennies or even for free. When calling Peru from abroad, dial the international access code for the country you are in, then Peru¨s country code (51), then the area code without the 0 and finally, the local number. When making international calls from Peru, dial the international access code (00), then the country code of where you are calling to, then the area code and finally the local phone number. In Peru any telephone number beginning with a 9 is a cell-phone number. Numbers beginning with 0800 are often toll-free only when dialed from private phones, not from public pay phones.

23-May-2023

Paul was the best guide we could have asked for. Funny, passionate and a great leader. So knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the history of the trail and Peru. Food blew our expectations out of the water, Mario the chef put out multi course meals every day, some of the best food we had our whole trip. Highly recommend this experience!

Salkanty Adventure

21-May-2023

Anthony was an amazing tour guide! So knowledgeable about the trails, culture, and history. He was very attentive and took care of everything for us. It was a challenging trek and very rewarding! The food was creative and fantastic (thank you Ermiño!), and our horseman Victor was super! Highly recommend this adventure.

This company knows their stuff!

22-May-2023

We had a great trip with Herlin and our stellar team of Super Chaskis (porters, cooks, etc). We had a fair amount of rain but the team was always prepared to make sure we were as comfortable as possible. Food was great, group was small (just 4 of us guests), and equipment was mostly solid. The real highlight was the final day at Machu Picchu. Great weather helped, but the team at Inkayni set themselves apart here. Very well organised, knew exactly how to navigate the larger crowds to make the most of our time. In particular our guide Herlin really showed his experience on this day and we felt lucky to be with him and Inkayni as opposed to most of the other groups. All in all a great experience and we would recommend Inkayni to our friends and others.

Amazing tour guide

16-May-2023

Our tour has two parts and we are reviewing the 1st one. Cusco, Maras, Chinchero, Sacred Valley, Machupicchu. Anthony our guide and Guido our drivers went above and beyond their duties, they worked as a team and took care of everything we needed. I want to stress that Anthony was amazing, very knowledgeable, friendly, flexible, and welcoming. My only suggestion for the company is that the hotel in Cusco was not located close enough to downtown, it was 20-25 min walk going downhill, coming back was a long hike. Daytime, no problem, night time taking a cab was required.

Tim K

Hospitable, flexible, hard working group that provides a a great overall experience.

16-May-2023

Myself and 3 friends had a great time doing the classic Inca Trail with Inkayni. We had a group of 6 and were extremely well looked after by our guide Guid, 9 porters, a head chef and assistant chef. Nice food throughout the trip and the porters carried all of our equipment minus day packs. Had our tents set up at each camp and were extremely hospitable and flexible with managing each situation throughout. Like most companies, you pay a premium for this service but you get a good overall experience in return with Inkayni.

Inkayni Tours - Absolutely Amazing!!!

20-May-2023

The Inkayni Tour Company did an excellent job from when we first started making plans for this trip (right before Covid) to when we were back home after finally being able to get to Peru. The communication was always prompt and helpful. The tour was very organized from the beginning to the end. Our guide, Eli (Eliston), was a wealth of knowledge and very fun to travel with. He made the Inka history come alive. He and everyone who worked with Inkayni went out of their way to ensure that we had a memorable and safe trip. Seeing Machu Picchu and all of the other Inka ruins was life changing and very humbling. The countryside is breathtaking. i highly recommend Inkayni Tours and Eli to anyone considering exploring this part of the world. Amazing!!!
