Itinerary

Day 1 Broome sights tour and beach day
Welcome to Broome, a coastal enclave famous for its great beaches and historic pearling industry. We will pick you up from your accommodation mid-morning and show you around this vibrant outback town and share the history as to why this is such a unique place. Afterwards, we'll head down to the beach where we can drive the truck onto the sand for a picnic lunch and try your hand at the best Aussie outdoor sport - beach cricket! This evening, we'll head back to our accommodation in Broome for some dinner before we hit the road tomorrow morning.

Day 2 Windjana Gorge
Leaving Broome early, the first stop is at Willare Bridge, overlooking the Fitzroy River. From here head out into the great Australian outback towards to Tunnel Creek. The creek has worn a 750-metre tunnel through the Napier Range. Join your guide for a walk through Tunnel Creek, learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander warrior Jandamarra. Next we head to Windjana Gorge, once an underwater reef just 350 million years ago. During the wet season a river flows all the way through it, but during the dry it’s really more a series of ponds and billabongs. Set out on a bit of an explore, hopefully spotting a freshwater crocodile or two. The western Kimberley region is full of endless stunning gorges that have to be explored and this afternoon is no exception. It is here we set up camp for our first night under the stars Note: Total driving time today is around five hours. Total walking distance is approximately three kilometres including walking through water in Tunnel Creek

Day 3 Bell Gorge and the Gibb River Road
Hit the road again and start travelling along the legendary Gibb River Road, a 600 kilometre dirt track running through the centre of the Kimberley region. Adventure to Bell Gorge is the first stop – a hidden highlight. This idyllic retreat, considered amongst the most beautiful gorge on the Gibb River Road, boasts cascading waterfalls and crystal clear pools filled with water from the wet season rains that fall in the King Leopold Ranges. Surrounded by a horseshoe of bright orange rock wall, there are smooth rocks to lounge on and welcome areas of shade. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to explore the gorges of Galvans or Adcock. In the evening, set up camp at Mount Barnett for the night, our campsite near Manning Gorge. Sit in the crystal clear freshwater river that flows by the campsite and watch the sun set as you start to feel like you are in the 'real' Australia. Note: Total driving time today is around three hours. Total walking distance is approximately four kilometres.

Day 4 Gibb River Road to El Questro
In the morning, explore Manning Gorge, taking an invigorating dip in a waterhole before continuing down the Gibb River Road. Your guide will point you in the direction of the best gorges to explore. Pass through remote and extraordinary country as you travel through this historic part of Australia. Cross the Pentecost River to reach the famous El Questro Station, where you’ll spend the night camping under the stars. Note: Total driving time today is around three-and-a-half hours. Total walking distance is approximately five kilometres.

Day 5 El Questro Station
Wake up with the knowledge of not having to pack up camp before spending the day exploring the amazing sights of El Questro Station. Enjoy a relaxing swim at Zebedee Springs before tackling the hike into the stunning El Questro Gorge. Tonight enjoy another night at the El Questro campsite, where you might choose to enjoy a well-earned drink at the station bar with your travel mates. Note: Total driving time today is only around 45 minutes. Total walking distance is up to five kilometres.

Day 6 Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Range)
Start the morning taking a hike in the beautiful Cockburn Ranges and a swim under the waterfall at Emma Gorge Then head out through the peaks and cliffs of the Carr Boyd and Durack Ranges, as you make your way to the remote outback township of Warmun (also known as Turkey Creek). In the afternoon, enjoy some 4WD action as your experienced guide winds our specially designed truck across the challenging terrain of the entrance to Purnululu National Park, home to the iconic Bungle Bungles. Arrive just in time to catch the sunset over the Osmond Ranges before relaxing into your overnight bush camp for dinner. Note: Total driving time today is approximately five hours. Total walking distance is approximately five kilometres.

Day 7 The Bungle Bungles
After breakfast prepare for a full day of activities. Explore the remarkable rock formations of the Bungle Bungle Range. Hike to the constricted, red gap of Echidna Chasm and the immense Cathedral Gorge. You'll also have the opportunity to experience another perspective of the Bungles in a helicopter flight (at your own expense). As the sun goes down, head back to your overnight bush camp. Note: Total driving time today is around an hour. Total walking distance is approximately five kilometres.

Day 8 Bungle Bungles and Lake Argyle
This morning you will once again experience some serious 4WD action as you wind your way out of the Bungle Bungles. Take some time to have a look around the picturesque town of Kununarra. In the late afternoon, travel down beside the Ord River to make camp at Lake Argyle. You have the choice of relaxing in the famous infinity pool overlooking the magnificent Lake Argyle or appreciating it from the water by choosing to do a cruise (own expense). This vast body water has been forged by the Ord River Dam. The biggest manmade lake in Australia, Lake Argyle is 18 times the size of Sydney Harbour! Note: Total driving time today is around 5 and a half hours. Total walking distance is one kilometer.

Day 9 Lake Argyle to the Katherine region
Not long after breakfast say goodbye to WA as from here we cross the state border into the Northern Territory. The day is spent enjoying the last views of the Boabs you have fallen in love with as we make our way towards our last camp for the night just outside of Nitmiluk National Park in the Katherine Region. Note: Total driving time today is around seven hours.

Day 10 Darwin
On the final day of the trip, stop at either the secluded gorge of Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) or take one last plunge for the trip into the cool waters of Edith Falls. In the afternoon, make your way to Darwin, where your adventure comes to an end. Please book any onward travel the following day. Note: Total driving today is around four and a half hours. Total walking distance is approximately two kilometres.

Sit back and enjoy the landscapes. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. Think of it as a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary for details on estimated drive times and specific logistical information.

Our leaders are the classic do-it-all Aussie – they know the best spots to watch the sunset, can drive you to your next destination, take you on a guided hike or even whip up dinner for the group on some trips. They will always be working hard to ensure you and your group have a fantastic time exploring Australia.

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

13-Dec-2022

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Wonderful Croatian tour

02-Dec-2022

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

North Morocco Adventure

25-Oct-2021

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

21-Oct-2021

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.
