Tour Overview

Each year, Berber communities migrate into the High Atlas Mountains to escape the heat of the lower valleys. Following 4000-year-old routes and guided by the seasons, these families are part of the nomadic Ait Atta tribes of southeast Morocco. On this eight-day adventure, you will join a family on an unforgettable walking expedition through the mountains. Sleeping in moving campsites and partaking in daily chores – like animal herding and traditional bread making – you’ll meet locals in tiny Berber villages and see the true wilderness of Morocco. This is a rare opportunity to form connections with locals and experience an ancient and well-preserved way of life, far from your ordinary.

Highlights

  • In this one-of-a-kind experience, become part of the biannual migration of nomadic Ait Atta tribespeople – a tradition that has taken place through Morocco’s Atlas Mountains for over 4000 years
  • Spend the week with a Berber family, getting to know them personally, walking the same routes as them and learning some basic Arabic to interact the local way.
  • Experience ancient nomadic culture at its heart and participate in daily chores such as milking goats, tending animal herds and setting up and packing down the campsite with your small group.
  • Enjoy delicious, freshly prepared Moroccan food at your camp each day and pick up some traditional cooking methods that have been used in these lands for thousands of years.
  • Wander the vibrant souqs, embracing the sights, sounds and smells of Marrakech on a guided walking tour, and dine on specialities such as tagine in the lively Djemaa el-Fna square.

Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Welcome to Marrakech, Morocco! Your expedition begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, perhaps get your bearings of the city with a walk around town. Marrakech is a feast for the senses. Explore the medina and the seemingly endless mosaic of souqs, each devoted to a separate trade – pottery, woodwork, copper, leather, carpets and spices. You might also like to visit the famous Koutoubia Mosque or check out the lesser-known tropical gardens of the French painter Jacques Majorelle (now owned by Yves Saint Laurent).

Day 2: Imassen

Location: Imassen

Today will be an early start. Travelling by private vehicle, head into the Skoura region of the Atlas Mountains. About 2500 kilometres long, the mountain range extends through Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. Cross over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass – one of the highest in North Africa. Upon arrival, there’s a one-hour walk to the first nomadic camp in Imassen, where you’ll meet your Berber family and discuss the next four days. After helping prepare and pack the equipment for the trek, sit down to a delicious dinner with the family and get to know each other.

Day 4: Imi n Taghia

Location: Imi n Taghia

By now, you’ll be getting used to rising early! This morning, the family will teach you how to prepare and bake bread in the traditional nomadic way. Gender roles differ between tribes and families, but generally, women look after the campsite, bring water and do the cooking, while men herd the sheep and go to the weekly markets to exchange goods. After breakfast, pack up and head on towards Imi N Taghia, passing through Laasker gorge along the way. You’ll be walking for around 4.5 hours in total. Once you’ve enjoyed lunch, help set up the tents and campsite for the evening in Imi n Taghia and lend a hand in dinner preparation.

Day 5: Aklim

Location: Aklim

Rise early again to bake bread with the family, before packing up and walking towards Aklim. Today’s trek takes around 4–5 hours. You’ll pass through traditional Berber villages on the way, giving you a great chance to practice any local phrases you’ve learnt. After lunch, help set up camp for the evening and sit down to relax before dinner.

Day 6: Ait Hmad

Location: Ait Hmad

You’re probably getting pretty good at that bread baking by now! After packing up the campsite and stocking up on breakfast, leave Aklim and make your way to Valley Ait Hmad, passing through more Berber villages. It’s about a 4–5-hour walk in total. Eat a picnic lunch and pitch the tents at your campsite. Tonight is the last night you’ll spend with your Berber family – hopefully, you’ve got to know them pretty well by now. With your leader and group, you may get the chance to draw on the traditional cooking methods you’ve learnt over the past few days and prepare a thank-you meal for the family.

Day 7: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Today, the walking component of your adventure comes to an end. After bidding farewell to your new Berber companions, drive back to Marrakech in a private vehicle with the rest of your group. On arrival, join the thronging crowds for dinner at the famous public square Djemaa el-Fna. Every night it comes alive with musicians, storytellers, fire-eaters and hundreds of small outdoor restaurants. Afterwards, settle into your hotel accommodation for the night.

Day 8: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Your Moroccan Expedition comes to an end after breakfast today. As there are no activities planned, you are free to depart the accommodation at any time, provided you comply with the hotel’s internal check-out time.

Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon!

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic.

We booked the 10 day Group Explorer package with them for Vietnam and Wow !!! . It was fantastic. We were initially a bit anxious, but that all settled after day one. There is a fair bit of travelling and moving involved, but we'll woth it as you get to see and experience loads .Our Guide Huy was brilliant and looked after us really well from local knowledge to restaurants and tour information and activities . It's worth doing folks with intrepid . Well done, keep up that standard of service.

I have travelled with Intrepid a number of times now and can't recommend them enough. The trips are always exciting, full of history and immersive in the culture and environment. The office staff are great too and always happy to help with any questions you might have. Everywhere I have gone with the company has been different but the guides and itinerary have always been excellent and full of knowledge and passion for their country. Add in the social responsibility angle the company has and it top quality ethical practice and you can't go wrong

    15-Mar-2024

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X

    North American Adventure

    12-Oct-2021

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

They offer some great deals and group travel itineraries without the flights but will include them if needed by the traveller ; leaving one to choose a more personal holiday stance or exploration & time schedule too. Neat!
