Tour Overview

The Lemosho route is one of our preferred routes due to its low traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. The Lemosho route starts off from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the lush rainforest to Shira Plateau. We recommend a minimum of 7 days to attempt this route but 8 days is preferable for better acclimatization and summit success. The Lemosho route joins the Machame route at Shira 2 Camp and then follows the same route through the southern circuit and descending at Mweka Gate.

•Distance: 6 km
•Hiking Time:3-4 hours

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

Day 2 : Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1

Location: Kilimanjaro

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

•Elevation (ft): 9,500ft to 11,500ft
•Distance: 8 km
•Hiking Time 5-6 hours

We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.

Day 3 : Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 to Moir Hut

•Elevation (ft): 11,500ft to 13,800 ft
•Distance: 14 km
•Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glacier peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Day 4 : Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Location: Kilimanjaro

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

•Elevation (ft): 13,800ft to 13,000ft
•Distance: 7 km
•Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

•Elevation (ft): 13,000ft to 15,000ft

Then, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 6 : Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Location: Kilimanjaro

•Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
•Habitat: Arctic

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.
At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.
From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Day 7 : Mweka Camp to Moshi

Location: Kilimanjaro

Meals Included: Breakfast

•Elevation (ft): 10,000ft to 5,400ft
•Distance: 10 km
•Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
•Habitat: Rain Forest

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

Unreal solo climb 19 year old female

10-Jan-2019

I had an absolutely fantastic time with Kilisa tours. The guides (Tammy, Joseph and Bakari) were so caring and knowledgeable, the food was amazing (thanks to the unbelievable chef Kurwa) and everyone worked together to give us the best chance of summiting. I was solo but joined a group to total 5 and all of us made it to the top! I always felt comfortable and the team at Kilisa always kept my motivation high, I would definitely recommend these guys!

Mountain beauty Amazing experience with Kilisa tours

20-Feb-2020

We were a group of 3 people from France, who made the 7-day ascent of the Lemosho route - descent Mweka Kilimanjaro Trek. Climbing Kilimanjaro under the Kilisa circuits was fabulous because we really had a great experience and we got the best service. Naick, who is the owner of the company, contacted us all the time and the communication was easy as he made all the logistical arrangements and the price was absolutely reasonable in addition This trip exceeded my expectations Everything was well planned, from arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfers to the hotel and back and of course the duration of the trek The route that we chose is very picturesque each day presented different sites. And this route helped us acclimatize to the high altitude and increased our chances of success before trying to Uhuru Peak. The food was delicious and varied every day, served with fruits and vegetables, including coffee and tea. I couldn't believe how creative the chef was at producing hot food on the mountain. In general, we could not have asked for a better guide and a better team than those in Kilisa The hike was great, it was a great success to stand at the top and we could not have done it without the support of this team we were strong and fit and for that we finished the hike a day earlier. And even after the hike, Naick was kind enough to invite us home and had dinner with his family It made for a truly remarkable experience. We had a great trip to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and even after. I would highly recommend this company without any hesitation.

7 day Lemosho route -Mount Kilimanjaro with KILISA ****KILISA BOMBA****

12-Mar-2020

We had the most incredible experience on the 8-day Lemosho route with Kilisa. We were extremely impressed with their efficiency and organisation. Everyone from the porters, camping crew, and guides, had such a positive attitude and provided us with everything we needed and more. Despite the unexpected weather conditions, our guides Oscar, Bakari, and Bryson supported us all the way, providing constant motivation and great knowledge. We could not have done it without their help! Special thanks as well, to Kurva (Mama Africa) for providing us with a feast breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He definitely did not disappoint in provided amazing meals in both quality and variety! Thank you Kilisa, for the fond memories. We have absolutely no hesitation recommending Kilisa to anyone who is interested in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!

Beyond grateful!!

15-Sep-2017

I will begin by saying that I don't usually write reviews, but I had such an exceptional experience with Kilisa, that I owe it to them to express my gratitude for such a wonderful service! My friends and I booked a combo package for Kilimanjaro trek and safari with Kilisa a few months prior to our trip. As other reviews noted, the price was extremely competitive and I had some concerns about the quality of service we would receive. However, Naick, the managing director, was able to alleviate any worry I had by answering all questions that came up prior to our trip and giving me detailed information about our itinerary and our combo package in general. Upon our arrival, the reassurance we had felt with Naick was reinforced by the rest of the crew. From the airport pick up, to the detailed gear check and briefing, one of our guides, Bakari was beyond exceptional. We felt safe and ready to take on the mountain! During the trek, both Bakari and Daniel (our second guide) were friendly, knowledgeable, informative and supportive. They kept track of both our health and progress and were encouraging in times of need. We felt extremely comfortable with them and always knew that they'd be ready to help in any way possible, and they always did. Their patience is also something to praise! The rest of the crew was equally amazing and friendly! Bob, our waiter was everyone's sunshine! His big smile kept us going, even during the toughest times. He was always ready to help in any way he could. On the other hand, Hassan, the cook, made sure we were always properly fed. In addition, he was always ready to gracefully entertain us with his songs. The group of porters in our crew was also friendly, helpful and incredibly hardworking. We felt at home with Kilisa's crew from the gate to the summit and back! I feel that the fact that we made it to the top of Kilimanjaro had a lot to do with the support, encouragement and amazing work of the Kilisa crew. I cannot praise them enough! The safari experience was also wonderful, not only because of the amazing sights, but also the friendly and helpful crew of guide and cook. Our driver/guide Kent went above and beyond to make sure we got te best views of the animals in the wild. Once our trek and safari were over, Naick and his crew were still ready to make sure we got the best experience in town. They gave us recommendations and were there every step of the way to ensure our wellbeing. It was sad to leave Tanzania. The country has such natural beauty that is amazing. However, the real beauty comes from its people and thanks to Kilisa it was clear to us from beginning to end.
