Tour Overview

Discover a different side of the great Andes mountain range and get the most amazing views of the mountains by taking this alternative route to Machu Picchu. Ascend to the highest pass at 4,650 meters above sea level for up-close-and-personal views of the massive Salkantay and Humantay mountain peaks in the Cordillera Vilcanota range, which are among the highest in Peru. This pristine high altitude trail is the perfect opportunity to get into nature and see abandoned Inca sites. This is the most challenging hike but you’ll get to walk very close to the glaciers and revel at the wondrous mountain peaks towering overhead as you breathe fresh mountain air. • Hike among 6,000m Andean peaks • Cross snowy high passes with incredible views • Reach the comfort of Aguas Calientes town • See the Machu Picchu site as it opens with a guide NOTES: * No Departures in January and February due to unfavorable climatic condition ** Note: On day 1, you will have a free day and 1 night's accommodation in Cuzco. You will start your actual trek on day 2.

Highlights

  • Diverse Landscapes: The Salkantay Trek traverses diverse landscapes, from lush cloud forests to high-altitude mountain passes, providing hikers with ever-changing scenery and breathtaking panoramic views.

  • Salkantay Mountain: The trek is named after the majestic Salkantay Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the Peruvian Andes. Witnessing the snow-capped peaks and glaciers of Salkantay is a highlight of the journey.

  • Humantay Lake: A side trip to Humantay Lake introduces trekkers to a stunning turquoise glacial lake nestled amid towering peaks. The reflection of the mountains in the pristine waters creates a picturesque setting.

  • Inca Ruins: Along the trek, discover lesser-known Inca ruins such as Llactapata. These archaeological sites provide a glimpse into the ancient Inca civilization, and Llactapata offers a unique perspective of Machu Picchu from a distance.

  • Remote Villages: Interact with local Andean communities and gain insights into their traditional way of life. Experience the warmth and hospitality of the locals, contributing to a cultural exchange.
