Tour Overview
Croatia’s beautiful Istrian Riviera is home to stunning beaches, an unspoilt coastline and picturesque hilltop villages, making it the perfect backdrop for a relaxing holiday. On this charming break we visit some of the highlights of this lovely northern corner of Croatia, an area with a strong Italian influence, including Pula with its fascinating Roman ruins, the hilltop majesty of historic Motovun and Opatija.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Rovinj
Known as the ‘Blue Pearl’ of the Adriatic, Rovinj is a beautiful fishing port nestled on Croatia’s Istrian Riviera. With its brightly-painted buildings lining the seafront, charming piazzas, winding cobbled streets and range of lovely restaurants, cafés and galleries, it’s no wonder that Rovinj is such a popular destination with visitors.
The baroque hilltop Church of St Euphemia is well worth a visit, or head to the seafront to enjoy the glorious views of the nearby islands and to watch the fishing boats coming into the harbour. You may also like to visit Rovinj Aquarium, one of the oldest in Europe with a history dating back to 1891, or the Town Museum, home to various archaeological finds, paintings and sculptures.
Day 2 : Pula
Beautifully located on the tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula and overlooking the sparkling Adriatic Sea, Pula is renowned for its fascinating ancient treasures dotted around the city. Stroll under the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii which dates back to 29BC, visit the Temple of Augustus, built in honour of the Emperor during AD2-14, and marvel at the Pula Arena, an incredibly well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and one of the most famous sights throughout Croatia. Of those that still remain, this amphitheatre is the sixth largest in the world and was completed under the reign of Emperor Flavius. It once held 23,000 spectators and still plays host to a range of concerts and events today.
After all that exploring, why not treat yourself to some lovely Istrian food with its Italian and Austro-Hungarian influences. Head to the harbourside for a choice of charming restaurants or step back in time at the Roman Forum, once the main square in Roman times and still a bustling piazza today with a range of tempting cafés.
