Tour Overview

An area rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage and lively traditions, Germany’s southernmost state of Bavaria has plenty to offer visitors. Together we explore this charming region with a scenic tour of the Romantic Road, one of Germany’s oldest tourist routes, which combines picturesque medieval walled towns and half-timbered houses with idyllic scenery. We also discover Bavaria’s capital city, Munich, and Lindau, a charming old island town on the eastern shores of Lake Constance.

Day 1 : Germany's Romantic Road

Stunning Alpine scenery, ancient walled towns and classic castles are just a few must-sees on Germany’s Romantic Road. The quaint towns of Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl burst with character and cosy, little cobblestone squares. Be sure sample a schneeballen sugared pastry as you explore the lovely boutiques.

Other places of interest include Heidenheim, with a striking castle and charming medieval timber-framed houses, along with Nördlingen, which boasts a postcard-worthy covered sentry’s walk and a sea of terracotta rooftops.

Day 2 : Munich

Just a stone’s throw from the famous German Alps, the city of Munich is a bustling feast of art and culture. The capital of Bavaria offers many architectural delights, historical sites and museums, plus a huge range of beer halls and gardens.

The famous double domed Frauenkirche church is well worth a look, and the vibrant Marienplatz square in Munich’s old town is perfect to sample some traditional Bavarian food and drink.

Day 3 : Lake Constance

Bordering Germany, Austria and Switzerland and lying below the northern edge of the Alps, the shores of Lake Constance are a patchwork of baroque churches, Benedictine abbeys, vineyards and lovely beaches.

Lindau on Lake Constance

The picturesque town of Lindau, situated on an island just off the shores of Lake Constance offers stunning views of the Austrian and Swiss Alps. With plenty of curious cobblestone passageways just waiting to be explored, there is so much to discover in this medieval town. Take the time to visit the old lighthouse or the beautiful merchant house of Cavazzen before kicking back in one of the squares to watch the world go by.

Day 4 : Heidelberg

The beautiful city of Heidelberg has plenty of charm and historic attractions. Built on the banks of the River Neckar, Germany’s oldest and most famous university city is surrounded by lush green forests and is renowned for its hilltop castle, iconic Old Bridge and Baroque-style Old Town full of narrow streets and grand, beautifully-preserved buildings. Pop to the Marktplatz to grab some local cuisine (anyone for crispy roast pork knuckles?) before browsing the little shops and don’t forget to admire the famous red sandstone Church of the Holy Spirit with its iconic basilica.
