Tour Overview
On this charming getaway enjoy two days of discovery with a relaxing cruise through the spectacular Limestones Mines and a journey behind a heritage train on the Severn Valley Steam Railway. We also delve into the history of glassmaking at the Limestone Red House Glass Cone Heritage Centre and spend time exploring lovely Bridgnorth on the River Severn.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Limestone Mines
The Black Country’s mining heritage comes to life at the incredible limestone mines in Dudley. Thousands of tonnes of limestone were dug out here in the 18th century and transported through the narrow tunnels to fuel the Industrial Revolution. Pop on your hard hat and enjoy a skipper-guided underground cruise along the world-famous Dudley Canal Tunnel to take in these impressive tunnels and limestone mines. We learn more about the history of this hidden world with two different underground audio-visual shows – a unique experience to remember!
Day 2 : Severn Valley Railway
From children enthralled by the magical huffs, puffs and toots to adults wanting to take a step back in time to when rail travel had a romantic feel to it, the heritage Severn Valley Railway is sure to delight everyone!
Enjoy unspoilt views and breathtaking panoramas only visible by steam locomotive as you meander through the 16 miles of countryside and pass through many ‘olde worlde’ stations between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.
A highlight of the trip is when the railway crosses over the River Severn via the Victoria Bridge - a massive 200-foot cast iron railway bridge which suspends high above the water and was featured in the film The Thirty-Nine Steps.
A journey on one of the most scenic heritage railways in the country won’t disappoint!
Day 3 : Red House Glass Cone Heritage And Craft Centre
Part of the Black Country UNESCO Global Geopark, the Stourbridge glass quarter has been home to glassmaking for over 400 years. There are several different attractions here, including the 18th-century Red House Glass Cone. Now one of only four cones left in the UK, it was used for the manufacture of glass until 1936. Discover more of its fascinating history during your visit, head to the visitor centre and artisan craft studios to browse the stunning range of locally-produced glassware and handcrafted items for sale, or treat yourself to the Belgian hot chocolate in the Red Cone Coffee House.
