Ongi Monastery

This small mountainous area along the river /Ongiin gol/ which is the tenth longest river of Mongolia with an overall length of 435 km. This temple makes a pleasant place to break a trip after a long drive from Baynzag. OngiinKhiid is a sightworthy monastery on Ongiriver about 18 km from SaikhanOvoo. Formerly one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia, it was founded in 1660 and consisted of two temples complexes on the North and South of the OngiGolriver. The older southern complex consisted of various administrative buildings as well as 11 temples. The northern complex, built in the 18th century, consisted of 17 temples - among them one of the largest temples in all of Mongolia. The grounds housed also 4 Buddhist universities. It was completely destroyed in 1939 under Khorloogiin Choibalsan, the then president, and leader of the Communist Party of Mongolia. Over 200 monks were killed, and many surviving monks were imprisoned or forced to join the Communist-controlled army. Numerous ruins including a tall stupa can be seen on the river and on the surrounding hills. In the 1990s, it was decided to rebuild the monastery. At present (2011), 13 monks live in the monastery.

Our next destination is the Karakorum and Erdenezuu monastery. After brief stroll along the Ongi river, we'll head on to capital of the ancient Mongolian empire. /13-14th century/ Kharkhorin (Karakorum) In the mid-13th century, Karakorum was a happening place. Chinggis Khan established a supply base here and his son Ogedei ordered the construction of a proper capital, a decree that attracted traders, dignitaries and skilled workers from across Asia and even Europe. The good times lasted around 40 years until Kublai moved the capital to Khanbalik (later called Beijing), a decision that still incites resentment among some Mongolians. Following the move to Beijing and the subsequent collapse of the Mongol Empire, Karakorum was abandoned and then destroyed by vengeful Manchurian soldiers in 1388. Whatever was left of Karakorum was used to help build, in the 16th century, the enormous monastery, ErdeneZuu monastery, which itself was badly damaged during the Stalinist purges. The rather nondescript Soviet-built town of Kharkhorin was built a couple of kilometers away from ErdeneZuu monastery, and there is little of interest in the town itself.

Nomadic of Blue Sky /Mongolian travel agency/

17-Feb-2022

Mongolia was my dream, and it became a reality during last summer, I came back amazed by the beauty of the landscapes, by unexpected encounters the kindness and hospitality of the Mongols who without knowing us, invited us in their yurt to offer us some delicious salty tea or a party - and it was thanks to our guide, professionalism, sense of discovery and resourcefulness that we had a great time and have benefited from every moment. Our guide Bayaraa had planned everything: local and delicious food, accommodation with nomads or bivouac in landscapes of breathtaking beauty and all in good mood. I dream to go back because Mongolia is great and there is so much to discover. Long live Bayaraa and "Nomadic of Blue Sky" team.

Golden Voyage tour Mongolia

17-Feb-2022

This trip was AMAZING! Our guide, Tuvshuu, was extremely knowledgeable, fun, friendly, and helpful. He even arranged vegan meals for me at each of our stops - from ger camps to hotels, to restaurants along the way. (The food was fabulous!) Our driver, Buugi, was also excellent. Some of the terrain was pretty rough and Buugi got us safely and comfortably through, even through a freak snowstorm! I’m a solo female traveller, as was the other woman on this tour, and I’ve honestly never felt more safe and well-cared for than I did with Nomadic of Blue Sky. Mongolia is unbelievably gorgeous. Breathtakingly beautiful. Absolutely my favorite place of the 17 countries I visited in my 6 month tour of Asia. You will love Mongolia and you will love Nomadic of Blue Sky! Just go!!

2 Week Tour...Golden Voyage

17-Feb-2022

Excellent trip for a taste of Mongolia focusing on big wide open spaces in Gobi desert. Long drives on bumpy off-road tracks, but that was part of fun. Nomadic of Blue Skies & guide went extra mile to ensure trip went well including organising pre & post trip hotels & airport transfers. Accomodation in gers & nomadic overnight stay were great. People were friendly everywhere although the locals speak limited English. Food was very good. Sometimes foreigners are reluctant to use unknown local operators but Nomadic of Blue Sky matched anything international companies could offer...highly recommended for those curious travellers wanting to discover the authentic southern Mongolia. Great value for money too as virtually everything is included in prepaid price. Recommended !

Eternal Blue Sky Tour!

17-Feb-2022

Mongolia is a hidden gem tucked away between Russia & China, this beautiful country of 3 million inhabitants has lots to offer! Our travel agent Nomadic of Blue Skies designed an itinerary for 8 of us family members, ages ranging from 17 – 85! Mr. Uuganbayr Batbold (Boldoo), Director of the agency was personally interacting with me to plan the itinerary. We set off from Ulaan Baatar in two vehicles & explored central Mongolia for the next 7 days. The arrangements were superb, the vehicles were in good condition & we had skilled drivers Kuko & Pujai to transport us safely over the off-road sections. We covered Terelj National Park, Khustai National Park to see the wild horses, at Elsen Tasarkhai we climbed the sand dunes, visited the Erdene Zuu Monastry, enjoyed the hot springs at Thenkher & had a stop over at picturesque Ugii Lake. The highlight of our trip was a visit to a typical nomad ger(tented dwelling). The couple welcomed us and served us some local delicacies. Our senior English speaking tour guide Mr. Tuvshoor was very professional and well informed about Mongolia. He was very attentive to our every request! The junior guide Ms Nara was very caring of my elderly parents. I would not hesitate to recommend Nomadic of Blue Sky as the preferred travel agent to organize a truly Mongolian Experience!
