Tour Overview
A small country in an African scale with just one and a half million inhabitants. It is located right on the equatorial line in western Africa. After the independence from France in 1960, the country has introduced a national pension, health insurance and support for families with children. These social landmarks are due to extraction of raw materials and oil since the sixties and today the average income is four times higher than for the other countries south of the equator. The capital Libreville appears prosperous with relatively good roads, neat and tidy the African way and virtually no slums. The cars are relatively new and people are well-dressed. And when it comes to gourmet, you will find here one of West Africa's top-10 restaurants. Only here it is still possible to see elephants at the water's edge. Gabon is home to huge nature reserves and forest areas, with up 20% of the plants endemic to the region. There are buffaloes and hippos, elephants, leopards and gorillas. In the Lope National Park, which is one of the most pristine rainforests, live 3-5000 free-living gorillas, in addition to countless white-nosed monkeys, chimpanzees and mandrills. An exciting and in many ways different African country.
