Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 - London To Langenau
Meet your Tour Manager at our London St Pancras Departure Office
and board the Eurostar to Brussels. Continue by rail, via Cologne,
to Ulm, then transfer by coach to Langenau for six nights.
Day 2 - Langenau
Day 2 is free. Originally a Roman
settlement, Langenau is one of the largest towns in the Alb-Donau
region of southern Germany, and sits in the shadow of the
impressive Swabian Alb mountain range. You have free time here to
explore the 14th-century Church of St Martin, the Pfleghofsall
Cultural Centre, and the Museum of Local History. Nearby Ulm is
also worth a visit; the birthplace of Albert Einstein, Ulm has
multiple claims to fame including a Guinness World Record for the
world's most crooked house, and the world's highest steeple -
situated at the top of its beautiful minster. Take a pleasant walk
along the River Danube where you'll find the 14th-century
'Rathaus', with its stunning façade and astronomical clock dating
back to the 16th century.
Day 3 - Exploring Lindau
Visit Lindau today, situated on the edge of Lake Constance. This
pretty town dates back to the 15th century and boasts breathtaking
views towards the Swiss and Austrian Alps. You are free to explore
this medieval destination with its tempting side streets and
well-preserved town houses and municipal buildings.
Perhaps pay a visit to the Mangentrum. A 13th-century building
that once served as a lighthouse for the lake, it's now adorned
with a colourful tiled roof following a lightning strike in the
1970s. Another option is the Haus zum Cavazzen, a former city
palace that has been turned into a museum. Dating back to the 16th
century, the beautiful building now serves as a reminder of
Lindau's past.
Day 4 - Neuschwanstein Castle
Spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle is today's destination. Built
by 'The Fairytale King', Ludwig II, in the 19th century, the castle
served no purpose as a fortification in the traditional sense, but
was instead an elaborate retreat for the reclusive monarch.
Featuring stunning towers and other typically medieval-style
architecture, the castle served as inspiration for the Walt
Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty'. Enjoy a guided tour, admiring the grand
interiors and stunning views across the Bavarian countryside. You
continue to nearby Füssen, a traditional Bavarian town on the
beautiful Romantic Road, where you have some free time to explore
its fairytale streets and pastel-toned, medieval buildings. Perhaps
visit a cosy tavern and indulge in a local beer or two.
Day 5 - Langenau And Beyond
Today is free to explore Langenau and other nearby towns. You
may wish to visit Munich, the delightful capital of Bavaria. Munich
is easily accessible by local rail, and there's plenty to see and
do. The landmark of the city is the cathedral of Frauenkirche, with
its twin onion-domed towers standing at a staggering 325 feet
high.
There's also one of the world's oldest galleries, the Alte
Pinakothek, to look around. Painters on display here include Ruben,
Botticelli, El Greco, and Titian. Munich's famous for its historic
beer halls, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink and lively
entertainment.
Day 6 - Rothenburg
Today, visit one of Germany's bestpreserved medieval towns,
Rothenburg, travelling along a part of the 'Romantic Road' - a
215-mile stretch through forests and mountains. Enjoy a guided tour
of the Old Town, home to Rothenburg's medieval fortifications,
Renaissance Town Hall, and halftimbered townhouses. There are also
shops full of traditional Bavarian wares, and German taverns to
entice you with the smell of local specialities.
Day 7 - Langenau And London
Travel by coach to Ulm this morning and catch the train to
Cologne. Change here for the service to Brussels and join the
Eurostar directly to London St Pancras.
Day 8 : Please Note
Please note that while every departure of this tour will feature
the same excursions, the order may differ from that shown
above.
