Days 1-2 - London & Tiefencastel

Travel from London St Pancras on the Eurostar to Paris, where
you change trains and continue to Strasbourg. You spend the night
in the city, which sits in the heart of France's Alsace region and
offers a captivating blend of French and German influences.

Day 2 is Christmas Eve, and you enjoy a morning
to explore Strasbourg. The city boasts a wealth of fascinating
medieval architecture, and as you walk along streets lined with
half-timbered buildings and head down enticing, twisting lanes,
you'll feel a little like you've stepped back in time. At
Christmastime, in particular, the city is a delight to discover. A
visit to the Christmas market here comes highly recommended; one of
the oldest and most iconic in Europe, the 'Christkindelsmärik' is
famous for its authentic Alsatian mulled wine.

This afternoon, you take the train to Tiefencastel in
Switzerland, your home for the next five nights. With only a couple
of hundred inhabitants, the small village retains its traditional
Swiss charms, and is a unique place to spend the festive
season.

Day 3 - Christmas on the Bernina Express

Enjoy a Christmas Day to remember today, as you celebrate
onboard the famous Bernina Express, travelling across the border to
Tirano in Italy. This remarkable railway line is over 100 years old
and has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. It's widely
recognised as one of the finest rail journeys the world, and as you
tunnel through snow-capped mountain ranges, cross spectacular
canyons and valleys, and glide alongside frozen lakes, you'll soon
realise why.

You enjoy a little free time in the Italian town of Tirano; a
fantastic opportunity to discover a whole new country at the most
wonderful time of year. Tonight, back in Tiefencastel, you sit down
to a delicious Christmas Day gala dinner - a perfect end to the
day.

Days 4-5 - St Moritz

Today is Boxing Day, and you spend it discovering the luxurious
resort town of St Moritz. Synonymous with glitz and glamour, St
Moritz is famous for its winter sports and attracts wealthy
holidaymakers from across the globe.

You journey through stunning Alpine scenery on the UNESCO-listed
Albula Line on your way to St Moritz, where upon arrival you have
some free time to explore the charming winter wonderland at your
own pace. Bedecked in its festive finery, charming Christmas light
displays and Christmas decorations line the streets, making
strolling through the town an experience in itself. Spend time
window shopping at the incredible designer boutiques and jewellers,
or perhaps pause for a hot chocolate and a spot of lunch at one of
the many chic cafés here.

On Day 5, you're free to relax at your hotel or
explore Tiefencastel, or indeed the rest of the region,
further.

Day 6 - Chur and the Arosa Line

You enjoy a journey on the pretty Arosa Line today, climbing to
the charming lakeside town of Arosa. Take in the rocky, wintry
scenery of the Graubünden canton en-route, winding through wild and
dramatic landscapes before arriving in Arosa, where you're met with
stunning vistas across the icy waters of Lake Obersee. After some
free time, continue by train to Chur, Switzerland's oldest
settlement with a history dating back over 5,000 years.

You have some time to explore this quintessentially Swiss town.
You could head to the quaint Old Town, which boasts
fantastically-preserved medieval town walls and buildings and is
entirely traffic-free, making it the ideal place to explore on
foot. At this time of year, Christmas decorations adorn the
buildings, adding an extra touch of magic.

Day 7 - The Glacier Express

A highlight of your holiday awaits you today, as you bid
farewell to Tiefencastel and enjoy a journey on the world-renowned
Glacier Express, travelling to Brig.

Known affectionately as the 'world's slowest express train', the
Glacier Express gently makes its way through the glorious scenery,
affording you a front-row view of some of the best of Switzerland's
natural beauty. During the winter months, the striking vistas are
transformed into a picture-postcard landscape of snowy meadows,
frozen waterfalls and white mountaintops. On board, a handy audio
guide narrates your journey, letting you know when a particularly
scenic or interesting spot is coming up, and lunch is served at
your seat during the journey, so you don't miss a moment of the
views.

On arrival in Brig, you change trains and head to Basel, a
medieval Swiss city on the banks on the Rhine River. Your luggage
will be waiting for you here, and you spend the night at a local
hotel.

Day 8 - Homeward bound

Your festive adventure comes to an end today. Leaving Basel, you
join the TGV train to Paris this morning. Here, you connect with
the Eurostar to London St Pancras.

Very good tours, knowledgeable and friendly Tour Managers. The hotel was very good and the locations visited were excellent. The heritage railways are interesting and lovely to travel on whether hauled by steam or diesel.

Seeing so many negative reviews...

29-May-2019

Seeing so many negative reviews of Rail Discoveries makes you wonder if we have been travelling with the same company for the past 7 years or so! Excelent holidays, good hotels, superb tour managers-what else could you ask for? However it pays to look closely at the brochure -if there are a lot of coach trips, then we usually do NOT book ( please note ,the guy who complained about the Scottish holiday with little train-travel-it's there in the itinerary). Having said that, we ARE travelling to Scotland for just such a holiday this autumn, and we know exactly what to expect, and nothing more. The train-travel to Scotland we treat as part of our rail holiday. As for comments about the food in some hotels, we have been underwhelmed by some-and delighted with others. As someone said, if you want better food, spend more and go with sister company Great Rail-as we have done in the past, and will do again. And if you don't like a hotel( we had a ghastly one in America-now removed from the tour, thank heavens)-take your comments to the company. They do listen. So please be assured, thousands of happy travellers book with rail Discoveries, and we have only met one couple out of hundreds we have travelled with who were not happy( with the food)-ALL the others on the tour were delighted with it! You can't please everyone.....

23-Sep-2024

We thoroughly enjoyed The Charming Dordogne tour. A good tour manager 'Tony', lovely hotel with lots of space to relax and chat with fellow travellers and a nice sized swimming pool for a bit of excersise. The restaurant just a few steps down the road provided pleasant food, good service and wine and coffee thrown in aswell. Our coach driver for the week was very knowledgeable and helpful, pointing out sights of interest, plus we had a couple of free days to explore the village with it's interesting museum and exhibition centre. I would definitely recommend this holiday

10-Aug-2022

A well-priced escorted tour of Switzerland with an excellent guide, Graham Carter. Hats off to Graham for his patience and cheerful leadership of our group of 36 with various levels of mobility and agility. A last minute change of hotel was a bit of a surprise and some of our group were disappointed with the substitution but we found it to be a nice tourist class 3 star with a good choice of buffet style meals. It needs to be remembered before you book that this is an active holiday. There are many train changes, steps and hills. Overall a good holiday but you need to be fairly agile to get the most out of the experience. Luckily we are!

We booked the Catalan holiday...

18-Jul-2023

We booked the Catalan holiday in January having been told that we would get an early booking discount of £50 each with the holiday costing £1049pp. I have just been sent an email offering a flash sale with the same holiday advertised at £849! I assume we will now be offered the same price and I look forward to a refund of £400.

18-May-2023

Very bad customer services. Cancelled one of the rail trip which was replaced by a trip by coach of Carisle, lovely that Carisle is!. So far no reason for the cancellation, no apology or compensation. Wrecked the holiday!. Company can't own up to their own mistakes and will blame someone else particularly their clients. Don't touch them with a barge pole!

17-Jan-2023

Very disappointed. Booked Isle of Man last year and dates got changed. Accepted the alternative dates offered and did enjoy the holiday. Booked the Glacier Express, Switzerland, this year for a special anniversary . Holiday was cancelled (despite being told that it would be very unlikely that it would be cancelled) and alternative dates offered unsuitable. If I wanted to go at a specific time I would not use this company again. There seem to be different companies offering these holidays but they are the same operator based in York.
