Itinerary

Day Day 1 - Puerto Pollensa

You fly from the UK today direct to Palma airport. On arrival you transfer to your hotel in Puerto Pollensa for the next seven nights, the Hotel Fergus Style Pollensa Park & Spa, located very close to the nearest beach and just 1.5km from the resort centre. The hotel's spa and beautiful location ensures you are never short of being completely relaxed during your time here.

Puerto Pollensa sits on Majorca's northeast coast and harnesses the laid back style of Spanish life that many visitors enjoy. The town sits within an idyllic bay, with the dramatic Serra de Tramuntana mountains rising in the background. Puerto Pollensa really is an authentic taste of Majorca, with attractive beaches very much top of the agenda here.

Day Day 2 - Cap de Formentor

Travel along the stunning Majorcan coastline towards the eastern end of the Formentor peninsula at Cap de Formentor, known by the locals as the 'Meeting point of the winds'. This spectacular coastline is home to a rugged headland and provides plenty of focal points to enjoy the views from.

One of these points is called Mirador des Colomer. Here you can take a path to an old watchtower which provides views over the peninsula in its entirety, as well as the Pollensa and Alcudia bays.

Day Day 3 - At Leisure

Today you have a full-day to spend at leisure You could relax and enjoy the hotel's excellent facilities or take a boat trip around the Cap de Formentor (payable locally).

Day Day 4 - Palma

Take the train from Sa Pobla to attractive Palma, the capital of the Balearic Islands. Palma's earliest history comes from the Roman period and has since changed hands many times, from Byzantine rule to Moorish occupation. Due to its affluence and ideal location for trade, Majorca was an ideal target for pirates operating in the area, most notably the Germanic Vandals - who raided the city on numerous occasions during the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

On arrival you embark upon a guided tour that introduces you to all the main sights of this splendid city. You see the cathedral, known as Le Seu - built in the attractive Catalan Gothic style that was started in 1229, but was only completed in 1601. You also have time to sample the city's cuisine at lunch. Be sure to see the Old City as well, its winding streets contain a distinct Moorish feel and there's plenty of hidden away art galleries and cafés to enjoy.

Day Day 5 - At leisure

Enjoy a day at leisure, the Majorcan climate is perfect for sunbathing and relaxing in your hotel. Be sure to visit the nearby beach or visit Puerto Pollensa itself, with plenty of shops and places to try local cuisine.

Day Day 6 - The 'Orange Express'

You take a ride on the famous Tren de Sóller or 'Orange Express'. This wood-panelled train has been running continuously since 1912 and connects the orange-rich landscapes of Sóller with Palma. The train passes through the pretty countryside with the backdrop of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range in view. Although originally used as a means to expand trade from this citrus-rich region, the train now carries almost exclusively tourists, who wish to enjoy the scenery of a train that connects towns and villages along its route.

An interesting fact about this region's citrus trade, is that, after the discovery of Vitamin C at the end of the 19th century, its health benefits became widely sought after.

Therefore, the oranges and lemons of Sóller became increasingly valuable. You also visit Deia, a small Artist's village in the mountains and idyllic Valldemossa, set in a place of outstanding natural beauty and home to a 13th century monastery. Steeped in old world charm, the winding streets and old stone houses contrast vividly with the deep blue sky and green olive and almond groves that cover the surrounding hillsides. Enjoy time to explore before returning to Pollensa.

Day Day 7 - At leisure

Today you enjoy a day at leisure with further time to relax at your hotel or to explore your surroundings.

Day Day 8 - Homeward bound

You transfer to Palma airport for your flight home today.

Very good tours, knowledgeable and friendly Tour Managers. The hotel was very good and the locations visited were excellent. The heritage railways are interesting and lovely to travel on whether hauled by steam or diesel.

Seeing so many negative reviews...

29-May-2019

Seeing so many negative reviews of Rail Discoveries makes you wonder if we have been travelling with the same company for the past 7 years or so! Excelent holidays, good hotels, superb tour managers-what else could you ask for? However it pays to look closely at the brochure -if there are a lot of coach trips, then we usually do NOT book ( please note ,the guy who complained about the Scottish holiday with little train-travel-it's there in the itinerary). Having said that, we ARE travelling to Scotland for just such a holiday this autumn, and we know exactly what to expect, and nothing more. The train-travel to Scotland we treat as part of our rail holiday. As for comments about the food in some hotels, we have been underwhelmed by some-and delighted with others. As someone said, if you want better food, spend more and go with sister company Great Rail-as we have done in the past, and will do again. And if you don't like a hotel( we had a ghastly one in America-now removed from the tour, thank heavens)-take your comments to the company. They do listen. So please be assured, thousands of happy travellers book with rail Discoveries, and we have only met one couple out of hundreds we have travelled with who were not happy( with the food)-ALL the others on the tour were delighted with it! You can't please everyone.....

We thoroughly enjoyed The Charming Dordogne tour. A good tour manager 'Tony', lovely hotel with lots of space to relax and chat with fellow travellers and a nice sized swimming pool for a bit of excersise. The restaurant just a few steps down the road provided pleasant food, good service and wine and coffee thrown in aswell. Our coach driver for the week was very knowledgeable and helpful, pointing out sights of interest, plus we had a couple of free days to explore the village with it's interesting museum and exhibition centre. I would definitely recommend this holiday

10-Aug-2022

A well-priced escorted tour of Switzerland with an excellent guide, Graham Carter. Hats off to Graham for his patience and cheerful leadership of our group of 36 with various levels of mobility and agility. A last minute change of hotel was a bit of a surprise and some of our group were disappointed with the substitution but we found it to be a nice tourist class 3 star with a good choice of buffet style meals. It needs to be remembered before you book that this is an active holiday. There are many train changes, steps and hills. Overall a good holiday but you need to be fairly agile to get the most out of the experience. Luckily we are!

We booked the Catalan holiday...

18-Jul-2023

We booked the Catalan holiday in January having been told that we would get an early booking discount of £50 each with the holiday costing £1049pp. I have just been sent an email offering a flash sale with the same holiday advertised at £849! I assume we will now be offered the same price and I look forward to a refund of £400.

18-May-2023

Very bad customer services. Cancelled one of the rail trip which was replaced by a trip by coach of Carisle, lovely that Carisle is!. So far no reason for the cancellation, no apology or compensation. Wrecked the holiday!. Company can't own up to their own mistakes and will blame someone else particularly their clients. Don't touch them with a barge pole!

17-Jan-2023

Very disappointed. Booked Isle of Man last year and dates got changed. Accepted the alternative dates offered and did enjoy the holiday. Booked the Glacier Express, Switzerland, this year for a special anniversary . Holiday was cancelled (despite being told that it would be very unlikely that it would be cancelled) and alternative dates offered unsuitable. If I wanted to go at a specific time I would not use this company again. There seem to be different companies offering these holidays but they are the same operator based in York.
