Tour Overview
Explore northerly Svalbard under the midnight sun on this exciting five-night small group tour.
Make Longyearbyen your base as you head out on incredible outdoor activities, from dog sledding on a glacier to electric biking through the town and the wilderness.
In the summer, quad bikes replace snowmobiles and a kayaking trip on the Adventfjord offers a spectacular vantage point from which to take in the Arctic landscape.
Throughout, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like Arctic foxes (or maybe even a polar bear), learn about the rich history of the area, and enjoy the strange golden hours that replace the dark of night as the midnight sun lingers above the horizon.
Itinerary
Today, fly from London to Longyearbyen, the main city on the island of Spitsbergen, in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. Welcome to the most northerly town in the world! Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the Coal Miners' Cabin to check in for your 5-night stay.
Day 2
Your Svalbard adventure takes off at a running start with an exciting morning of dog sledding. When the snow has melted in the valley, it is still possible to engage in this traditional activity up on the Foxfonna Glacier. As an added bonus, the views over the Isfjord, Ardent Valley and the mountains surrounding the area are fantastic! After lunch, trade the sled in for wheels - 2 of them to be exact - as you explore Lonyearbyen's sights from an electric bike. The trail starts in Longyearbyen and heads out towards the beautiful Advent Valley which is teeming with birdlife during the summer months. Learn about the rich coal mining history of the area as you explore the area. (B,L)
Day 3
Delve into the history of Longyearbyen with guided visits to the Svalbard Museum and Galleri Svalbard. Learn about the discovery of Spitsbergen and about Longyearbyen, including its wildlife, mining and hunting history. In the afternoon, take to the seas in an environmentally friendly, hybrid catamaran on an exciting trip to the Russian owned mining settlement of Barentsburg. A visit to Barentsburg is fascinating and it is a really unique experience to be able to combine the untouched nature of Norway with Russian culture all in one day. Upon arrival back in Longyearben, sample some of the world’s most northerly brewed beer during at a tasting session at the Svalbard Brewery. (B,D)
Day 4
After breakfast, embark on an exhilarating quad bike safari through the summery Arctic landscapes. It's not uncommon to see wildlife as you ride under the midnight sun which brings out many species of birds, deer and foxes. Head out from Longyearbyen and drive into the Adventdalen and then into the beautiful Endalen and up the winding road to Breinosa, where Mine 7 is located. After a 2-course lunch there is a few hours of leisure time before utilising the midnight sun to enjoy on an evening kayaking trip on the Adventfjord. (B,L)
Day 5
Power through the majestic fjords of Spitsbergen and marvel at the mighty Tuna and von Post glaciers as they grow from a tiny white-blue line to a towering wall of sparkling ice on this exciting boat trip that takes you deep into the Tempelfjorden, past teeming bird cliffs and towering mountains. Icebergs fill the fjord and there will be plenty of time to study these icy blue formations while looking out for seals and other Arctic wildlife. Go ashore at a historical hunting area and enjoy an expedition lunch with magical views over the fjord. The remainder of the afternoon is free until it is time to celebrate your incredible holiday with a farewell dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 6
After breakfast it is time to bid farewell to the Arctic and transfer to the Airport for your flight home. (B)
