Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Ljubljana

You’ll be met at the airport by a member of the team for your flight to Ljubljana. On arrival, a coach will transfer you to your hotel where you stay for the duration of your tour.

Day 2

Ljubljana

Ljubljana is a capital city that represents Slovenia beautifully, wearing its green credentials with pride. As far from a concrete jungle as a city can possibly get, one of Ljubljana’s key attractions is the river found snaking its way around Castle Hill, a thickly forested mound with a 15th century castle perched at its top.

This morning, we are shown around the highlights of the city by a local guide, including the pedestrianised Old Town that sits between the base of Castle Hill and the river. This lattice of white-walled, red-roofed buildings hides a trio of delightful squares that are home to some of the city’s most important landmarks, including the Town Hall in trademark Slovenian Venetian-gothic style, with a copy of the Rome-inspired Robba Fountain in front (the original you can see in the city’s National Museum), the Hercules Fountain, the Church of St Florian with its prominent spire and the famous Sticna Mansion.

Another Roman-baroque building of beauty in the Old Town is St Nicholas’ Church, also known as Ljubljana Cathedral, a cream and white-coloured confection topped with a green dome and easily recognisable twin towers – a peek at the incredible frescoed and gilded interior will leave you open-mouthed in awe.

To reach another of Ljubljana’s must-see areas we’ll need to cross prominent city architect Jože Plecnik’s famous Triple Bridge, a key point for crossing the river from the Old Town, and one which leads directly to the city’s famous Prešeren (Prešernov) Square. There you’ll spot the distinctive salmon-coloured Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the bronze statue monument of Slovenia’s national poet, France Prešeren, which stands in front of the elegant white façade of the Central Pharmacy building.

Free time in Ljubljana

This afternoon you have free time to explore the city at your leisure. Perhaps, after grabbing a hearty bite to eat while perusing the Plecnik-designed Central Market, you’ll take the funicular up to the castle for the best bird’s eye view of the city, popping into the Virtual Castle attraction and the Museum of Puppetry while you’re there. Or you might choose to relax on a river boat cruise, or simply stroll the café-lined promenade – either way, be sure to look out for the Dragon Bridge as you go.

If you need a sweet treat to keep you going, why not try one of the more unusual chocolate combinations offered – we imagine that the fig and prosciutto will be a new experience! But save some room for dinner as, this evening, we’ll enjoy a meal together after a welcome drink to get to know your fellow travellers.

Included experience:

Guided walking tour of Ljubljana

Day 3

Piran

This morning sees us crossing to the other side of the country, to the tiny stretch of coastline at the Gulf of Trieste. Facing Venice across the Adriatic, seaside Piran mirrors its Italian neighbour with its Venetian-gothic architecture, pristine marble-paved square (which used to be the inner harbour, until the off-putting smell of stagnant water encouraged the powers that be to fill it in), and its winding alleyways lined with a wishy-washy rainbow of shuttered houses.

You’ve got many works of Venetian art to meander between, including the 19th century statue of local violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini (who you can learn more about in the museum at nearby Tartini House), and depictions of St George by Venetian baroque painters in the town’s cathedral – a white-walled building that sits on a cliff beside the blue waters below. Piran even has its own ‘Venetian House’, an exquisite 15th century palace overlooked by the cathedral’s replica of St Mark’s bell tower in Venice.

Once you’ve perused this coastal town’s main landmarks, why not energise yourself with a walk up to the town walls, where you can scale the Gate Tower and walk along part of the parapet? Or simply stroll the harbour and promenade, perhaps stopping for a delicious seafood lunch made with ingredients that you’re unlikely to find fresher across the whole of land-locked Slovenia.

Lipica

This afternoon our tour moves on to nearby Lipica, where we’ll enjoy the privilege of getting close to the rare and prestigious breed of Lipizzaner horses, known as being the horse of royalty. This short journey includes a quick trip over the Italian border, before we cross back to Slovenia just moments later!

A delightful presentation by the Classical Riding School of these highly trained horses performing their complex routines is followed by a guided tour of the 400-horse stud farm. During our visit there’s ample opportunity to learn about the distinctive white breed – who are branded with a letter L on their left cheek - their history, and the 436-year history of the farm.

Included experience:

Visit to Piran and guided tour of the Lipica Stud Farm with performance

Day 4

Ptuj

After breakfast we leave the bustling capital behind and head northeast towards the Hungarian border, first stopping at almost impossibly pretty Ptuj, which sits quietly beside the Drava River. Said to be the oldest town in Slovenia, Ptuj packs plenty of historical importance into its small centre, and after a brief orientation of the Old Town, you’ll be left to uncover these gems for yourself.

Maribor

From Ptuj it’s on to its big sister city further along the river, Maribor, which is the second largest in the country. During our arranged walking tour with a local guide, you’ll get chance to see the celebrated Old Vine in the lively Lent district – the oldest fruitful vine in the world – as well as this stunning city’s other sights, including the renaissance-style Town Hall and the Plague Column that sit on the bustling Main Square, and the imposing, red-bricked Franciscan church and monastery.

This afternoon experience a wine tasting and learn about the production of local Slovenian wine.

Included experience:

Guided tours of Ptuj and Maribor, plus tour and wine tasting at Vinag

Day 5

Lake Bled

There are so many superlatives to describe Slovenia’s most famous attraction, Lake Bled – beautiful, stunning, romantic, awe-inspiring, picturesque, charming – and yet you might find yourself rendered speechless at the sight of the glassy lake framed by forested hills, castle-topped cliffs and the mountains of the Julian Alps. You’ll feel spoilt for scenery as we arrive in Bled this morning, having passed through undulating tree-covered countryside, including the Soca Valley, with the odd spired church reminding us of our diminishing distance from Austria.

Of course, the prize for the most perfectly positioned church in all of Slovenia has to go to the Church of the Assumption, with its spired tower (complete with ‘wishing bell’ which you can request to ring to ask a special favour) reaching high above the trees that circle the tiny tear-shaped Bled Island. As our traditional canopied rowing boat cuts quietly through the still, shimmering waters, you’ll experience this storybook scene to its full effect.

On reaching the island, you can climb the 99 steps of the South Staircase (following in the weary footsteps of local new husbands who are led by tradition to carry their brides to the very top!) and if you wish you can visit the church and see the remains of the 15th century frescoes and the gold alter inside. Or you can choose to simply stroll the circumference of the island, soaking up a full 360 degrees of jaw-dropping views back across the lake.

Once back on shore you’re free to make the most of the last day of our tour with a wander of the quaint town of Bled itself, and a stroll of the grassy lakeside promenade. Why not make a café stop-off to try the Kremsnita, a local speciality cake crammed with vanilla cream and custard that’s almost as heavenly as the setting?

You may also wish to visit medieval Bled Castle, the oldest in Slovenia, if you wish. Unapologetically dramatic, this two-level fortress perches precariously on the edge of a sheer 100m drop down a cliffside and into the water of the lake below and will reward its visitors with a unique vantage point from which to survey the splendour of this true treasure of Slovenia.

Day 6

Return home

At the appropriate time you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

We would go again in a heartbeat

22-Jan-2022

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.

Riviera South Africa tour - awesome

21-May-2021

Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Rhine Christmas markets cruise

09-Dec-2019

Just completed a 5 day trip on the Rhine. Our first river cruise and a tester for future cruises. The boat was well appointed and the cabin and public areas were spotlessly clean. The staff were attentive and contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere on the boat. The quality of the food surpassed that which we have experiened on sea cruises in recent years. I have written little because it was a faultless experience. We have booked a further cruise (in France) on the basis of our experience.

Cruise ship William Wordsworth: A cruise ship of excellence, very well appointed, comfortable & indulgent. We departed Budapest and cruised the Blue Danube heading to Vienna. The top deck offers sun loungers, a heated pool, golf and a place to just sit & relax. The cabins have everything you could want for but above all incredible comfortable. The staff are professional, courteous, and attentive and do everything to make your stay a pure pleasure. This is an experience you will remember for many years.

Although most people seem to book and pay for their holidays online, because we live close by we prefer to make a personal visit. In my opinion if they are offering this as an option they should be better equipped to accommodate visits in person. We have not been on our river cruise yet, so can't comment on that yet.

My 3rd Riviera trip within...

16-Feb-2024

My 3rd Riviera trip within a year and I wasn't disappointed 😁 This time it was https://www.rivieratravel.co.uk/escorted-tours/southern-india-coastal-route-solo-travellers This trip, although not cheap, it really offers exceptional value for money as you see a lot of Tamil Nadu and Kerela, stay in fantastic hotels, excellent breakfasts every day as well as some lunches and dinners also included. George Bareham, our "Tour Manager" was brilliant, very professional, but also friendly and diligent. Satheeshan, our local guide was helpful and picked me up antibiotics when I got ill, he was a nice chap, if (for my taste) went on a bit and used 20 words when 1 would suffice. Mr Sweeny, our coach driver was fantastic, really professional and an exceptionally good driver. His assistant, Murgon wad a delight, always smiling and attentive. This is a full on trip, early morning starts and quite a packed itinerary, but still leaving time to laze around some brilliant hotel swimming pools. Only a couple of suggestions to improve the holiday. More shopping time in Cochin and change carriers from Etihad who, unfortunately aren't the excellent airline they used to be. But, will I use Riviera Travel again - Yes 😁

22-Sep-2023

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again
