Tour Overview

Once two of Europe's strongest nations, rich with the footprints of the Vikings and the Hanseatic League wonderfully contrasted modern Scandinavia - you'll love their cultured atmosphere.

Think of Sweden and Denmark and a host of unique images immediately spring to your mind. Quaint, historic capitals rich with the architectural legacies of the Hanseatic League; pristine streets, wide-open spaces; a love of nature and respect for the environment; home of the Vikings, modern monarchies; peace-loving and some of the most pleasant people you will ever meet. All this is true but there really is so much more. You may find it surprising that Denmark and Sweden were two of medieval Europe's most powerful nations. Today both are littered with countless legacies: rich palaces rivalling Europe's finest burst with art and antiques; sleepy thatched villages with exquisite churches abound plus atmospheric gabled towns with delightful cobbled streets and typically Baltic historical centres everywhere. There are significant Viking remains and a host of museums to visit, indeed Stockholm itself has over 100 including a fascinating one dedicated to the Nobel Prizes.

Both cities have played host to royalty since the Viking age and their palaces and wonderful parks, set against a stunning background of picturesque lakes, canals and natural harbours, create a majestic framework for today's vibrant modern capitals where queues are rare, graffiti is even rarer and litter is almost unknown. Colourful waterfronts hark back to the great Viking traditions of yesteryear with a host of cultural delights from the Dark Ages to the ultra-modern of today.

  • See everything Stockholm has to offer including its colourful, medieval old town of ‘Gamla Stan’

  • Tour Sweden’s Royal Palace with a guide, seeing its lavish rooms filled with sumptuous furnishings and state regalia

  • Visit the world-famous Vasa Museum

  • Receive a complimentary Stockholm Travelcard, allowing you to make the most of your free time in the city

  • Discover Roskilde and its stunning Cathedral

  • Visit the Viking museum on the remains of an ancient harbour and see its collection of 11th-century ships

  • Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Copenhagen, centred on the charming Nyhavn Harbour, one of Europe’s most picturesque waterfronts

  • Explore Fredericksborg Palace and gardens, a baroque masterpiece known as the Nordic Versailles

  • Travel on a high-speed train from Stockholm to Copenhagen

Day 2 : Stockholm City Tour & Vasa Museum

Location: Stockholm, Vasa Museum

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Stockholm is a fascinating city tumbling across an idyllic archipelago on the shores of the Baltic Sea. This morning we have a city tour when history comes to life and you can really appreciate not only its cultural and architectural highlights but the sheer atmosphere, harmony and evident love of life emanating from virtually everywhere. ‘Gamla Stan’ - the medieval Old Town set around some small islands is the city’s heart. Many of the city’s oldest buildings dating from the 13th century are here: Storkyrkan and Riddarholmskyrkan churches; coronation and the burial places of Swedish monarchs with their tall spires dominate the city.

We visit the Royal Palace, the king’s official residence and the unmistakable jewel in Stockholm’s crown. This combination of current royal residence, workplace, museums and historic monument is open to the public, making it unique amongst European regal palaces. You will also see the Royal Apartments, great corridors, historic rooms and three separate museums including the treasury’s crown jewels.

After our visit to the palace, there’s time for lunch before we visit the Vasa Museum on the island of Djurgården. The most visited museum in Scandinavia, it is dedicated to the remarkable Vasa, the world’s only preserved 17th-century ship and an art treasure that’s one of a kind. Take a close look at the hundreds of sculptures carved into the vessel – most of the vessel is original!

Day 3 : Free Day In Stockholm

Location: Stockholm

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

The day is at leisure for you to explore this wonderful city. Your Stockholm Travelcard gives you unlimited travel on the city’s public transport for a designated period. You could discover Stadshuset (City Hall) where Nobel Prize winners enjoy their banquet. Perhaps return to Djurgården island, a calm oasis with fine park areas for a relaxing stroll. The island is also home to an amusement park and 22 world-class museums including the Nordic Museum, Sweden’s largest museum of cultural history, and even one dedicated to ABBA! Why not enjoy a boat trip through the canal and waterside views of Stockholm’s most well-known sights?

Day 4 : Train To Copenhagen

Location: Copenhagen

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: 4* Scandic Spectrum Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today we take the high-speed train (approximately 5 hours) to Copenhagen. You are whisked in comfort though almost deserted rolling landscapes which characterise rural Sweden. After the sea bridge and tunnel, we arrive in Copenhagen.

Day 5 : Copenhagen

Location: Copenhagen

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: 4* Scandic Spectrum Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

After breakfast we have a guided tour of Copenhagen, a real revelation, ironically perhaps best known for two iconic landmarks, the Carlsberg Brewery and the Little Mermaid, the statue inspired by the famous Dane - Hans Christian Andersen. You’ll see the Royal Danish Theatre which played a key role in his life. Other sights include the Houses of Parliament, the Christiansborg, the magnificent Amalienborg Palace, winter residence of the Monarchy and the world-famous Tivoli pleasure gardens famous for its street entertainers and music concerts.

The afternoon and evening are free so that you can explore the many wonders of this scrupulously clean, smart yet relaxed city as you wish. The remarkable Royal Library, is worth a visit as are the National Museum and the Ny Carlsberg art collection – another cultural highlight founded by the famous brewer! On a glorious summer evening there is nowhere more pleasant than one of Copenhagen’s harbour side restaurants to enjoy a leisurely dinner.

Day 6 : Viking Museum & Frederiksberg Palace

Location: Viking Museum, Frederiksberg Palace

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: 4* Scandic Spectrum Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today we explore a little more of Denmark commencing with historic Roskilde, the country’s medieval capital. Firstly we visit the outstanding Cathedral, one of the world’s few brick built gothic structures. Next we visit the extraordinary Viking museum, on the remains of an ancient harbour. It features five 11th-century Viking ships in staggering condition after being preserved in mud for centuries. There’s also a vibrant community of craftsmen here perpetuating boatbuilding skills by constructing replica boats including a 30-metre long Sea Stallion of Glendalough which in 2007 repeated its original voyage to Dublin.

Next we head north to Frederiksborg Slot a majestic Renaissance palace, a real Nordic Versailles. Surrounded by a stately lake and set in glorious manicured baroque and romantic English styled gardens. Fredericksborg is now a national museum and is a fitting end to the day as we return to Copenhagen late afternoon.

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

Thankyou Riviera and all the...

Thankyou Riviera and all the staff on the William Wordsworth Danube River cruise. My husband and i have just travelled on the Danube to celebrate my husbands 60th and we had such a lovely experience. We were younger than most of the travellers but we met so many lovely people so this wasnt a problem. The staff were so lovely and professional. The service we experienced was so high. The boat was beautiful, the food amazing and the excursions were informative and well managed. I would definately recommend riviera as a company. In fact we are now considering their Japan holiday.

We would go again in a heartbeat

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.

Riviera South Africa tour - awesome

Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Rhine Christmas markets cruise

Just completed a 5 day trip on the Rhine. Our first river cruise and a tester for future cruises. The boat was well appointed and the cabin and public areas were spotlessly clean. The staff were attentive and contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere on the boat. The quality of the food surpassed that which we have experiened on sea cruises in recent years. I have written little because it was a faultless experience. We have booked a further cruise (in France) on the basis of our experience.

Although most people seem to book and pay for their holidays online, because we live close by we prefer to make a personal visit. In my opinion if they are offering this as an option they should be better equipped to accommodate visits in person. We have not been on our river cruise yet, so can't comment on that yet.

My 3rd Riviera trip within...

My 3rd Riviera trip within a year and I wasn't disappointed 😁 This time it was This trip, although not cheap, it really offers exceptional value for money as you see a lot of Tamil Nadu and Kerela, stay in fantastic hotels, excellent breakfasts every day as well as some lunches and dinners also included. George Bareham, our "Tour Manager" was brilliant, very professional, but also friendly and diligent. Satheeshan, our local guide was helpful and picked me up antibiotics when I got ill, he was a nice chap, if (for my taste) went on a bit and used 20 words when 1 would suffice. Mr Sweeny, our coach driver was fantastic, really professional and an exceptionally good driver. His assistant, Murgon wad a delight, always smiling and attentive. This is a full on trip, early morning starts and quite a packed itinerary, but still leaving time to laze around some brilliant hotel swimming pools. Only a couple of suggestions to improve the holiday. More shopping time in Cochin and change carriers from Etihad who, unfortunately aren't the excellent airline they used to be. But, will I use Riviera Travel again - Yes 😁

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again
