Tour Overview

For natural inspiration, look no further than the Highlands of Scotland, where deep lochs reflect majestic mountains, and red deer can often be spotted roaming through the landscape. On this UK holiday, spend time at the last remaining single malt scotch whiskey distillery on the Black Isle and take a ride on Kyle Lochalsh Railway - one of the most picturesque lines in the world.

Your base for this adventure of discovery is the 4-star Macdonald Drumossie Hotel (3Q+), located four miles from Inverness. It is an art deco bastion of elegance enjoying peace, tranquility and isolation.

Day 1 Inverness

Accommodation Name: Macdonald Drumossie Hotel

Settle into the Macdonald Drumossie Hotel (3Q+) and join your host for a welcome drink before dinner. D

Day 2 Loch Ness cruise and Glen Ord Distillery

Accommodation Name: Macdonald Drumossie Hotel

The subject of one of the finest monster mysteries in the world, Loch Ness is also undeniably picturesque. On a calm day, the mirror-like water reflects the rolling hillscapes beyond. You are invited to take a two-hour cruise on Loch Ness. Afterwards, you will be taken to Dochgarroch for some free time, during which you can purchase lunch at your own expense.

Make the journey to the Glen Ord Distillery, where (in their words) ‘barley from the Black Isle meets water from the White Burn to make a Scotch of vibrant colour.’ Following a tour of the site that has been in use since the mid-19th century, enjoy a tasting of single malt, illustrating its quality. B, D

Day 3 Kyle of Lochalsh

Accommodation Name: Macdonald Drumossie Hotel

The Kyle Line is one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world. Board the train in Inverness, take your seats and enjoy two and a half hours of picturesque prettiness slipping past your window.

Highlights along the way include herds of deer between Loch Luichart and Garve, the isolated mountain of Ben Wyvis, and the Torridon Peaks. In Kyle of Lochalsh, the gateway to the Isle of Skye, you have free time to admire the scenery that wraps around this modest village before making the return journey to Inverness. B, D

Day 4 At leisure

Accommodation Name: Macdonald Drumossie Hotel

With no scheduled excursions, consider taking a taxi into Inverness - perhaps stopping at the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery - or going a little further afield to the Battlefield of Culloden - at which the Jacobite rising of 1745 was crushed. B, D

Day 5 Strathspey Steam Railway

Accommodation Name: Macdonald Drumossie Hotel

In most of the UK, steam trains have largely died out; the reason being too costly to run or simply not logistically viable. Along the Strathspey Railway Line, however, the puff puffing and choo-chooing of trains can continue to be seen and heard today. Since 1978, a team of dedicated volunteers has invited visitors to experience highland steam travel. Enjoy a trip back to an era when ‘whistles blew, carriage doors slammed shut and there was a familiar click-clack, rhythm of the rails.’ B, D

Day 6 Farewell

Accommodation Name: Macdonald Drumossie Hotel

Leave the Highlands behind, perhaps now understanding why Robert Burns wrote ‘wherever I wander, wherever I rove, the hills of the Highlands forever I love.’ B
