Today, we enjoy a journey on the Settle-Carlisle Railway – one of the most scenic and impressive railways in the UK! The last great mainline railway to be built and completed for passenger travel in 1876, building the railway presented many challenges due to the remote and harsh landscape. With 21 viaducts, 14 tunnels and 72 miles of track, it was advertised as the most picturesque route to Scotland, and the Victorian and Edwardian travelling public took it to their hearts. The route takes us over the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct and through the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor.

With a fascinating history, stretching back to the beginning of the industrial revolution, the East Lancashire Railway has been carrying passengers and goods around the region for almost 200 years.
