Tour Overview

Once the stopover for ancient nomadic Bedouins, Jordan is now enthralling a new generation of adventure travellers. Follow in the footsteps of Roman Emperor Hadrian, the Prophet Moses, and Lawrence of Arabia and explore the majestic ruins of bygone civilizations, the uber-salty Dead Sea, and the bare sands of Wadi Rum. Mountain biking on former caravan routes offers a local perspective, getting you up close and personal to the shepherds and perhaps even to a camel or two.

From vibrant and urban Amman, flanked by ancient citadels and Roman ampitheatres, we explore this oasis of the Middle East from north to south. When possible we transfer high and bike down, including a descent to the lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea. Float and cover yourself in mud before heading up to Mount Nebo, where Moses looked across at the Promised Land, from which we descend to the edge of the Dana Nature Reserve, a bird watcher's paradise. Dirt trails take us along a ridge and eventually above Petra, though the city itself is purposefully difficult to see and will be discovered the next day on foot. Trade ancient civilizations for the stark desert of Wadi Rum, also known as the valley of the moon. We re-hydrate at the Red Sea, our last stop in southern Jordan.

Jordan will be unveiled to you in a myriad of layers, from ancient ruins, vibrant culture, unique overnights to exquisite cuisine and all while biking the length of the country.

We ride 192 km, about 80% off road, in 5 cycling days. The trails are single track to gentler dirt roads. We will be riding through valleys, alongside and into streams, and there will be some climbing. Please note that the daily ascents and descents listed in the itinerary. There are a few sections with limited vehicle support on this tour due to the remoteness of the trails. In case of an emergency, we will be able to call for assistance. Please bring a camelbak or similar hydration system for water and to carry snacks. Your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty.

Suitability: You should be confident of your physical condition and bike handling skills. Some climbs are challenging, and so you should have a good level of fitness to cope with more than 1,000 m of climbing on Day 4. As mountain biking surfaces require competent bike handling skills, it is advisable to have off-road, and preferably some single-track experience, although difficult obstacles can always be avoided. Suitable for cyclists with a keen attitude and adventurous nature!

Biking Conditions: This tour follows a mixture of dirt trails, rocky surface, gravel paths, off-road biking as well as tarmac. The daily distances aren't long, between 20-54 km in a day, but we will be stopping to see sites along the way and be challenged by the ascents and descents.

Day 3 : Dead Sea - Dana

Accommodation: Hotel

We start today with a visit to a medieval castle, but we need to transfer to the city of Karak first. The castle dominates the skyline, an ancient Crusader Castle, where we will explore the maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. The castle provides an impressive insight into the architectural and military skills of the Crusaders. We get into cycling right after the city of Karak. This section passes through rural countryside and then races downhill along the King’s Highway passing the Tanour Dam just outside of Karak Governorate limits, ending at the bottom of Wadi Hasa. We overnight on the edge of the Dana Biosphere, Jordan’s largest nature reserve and home to a great variety of wildlife. Our hotel is in Dana Village, occupied since about 4,000 BC. Today, Dana is inhabited mostly by clans of the Al Ata’ata, who settled in the area during the Ottoman period, about four hundred years ago, and built the present village. The crumbling village was nearly abandoned, but now 70 traditional stone houses have been restored, enabling some families to remain in the village. It will then take about an hour to transfer to Dana Nature Reserve for our overnight stop.

Day 4 : Dana - Little Petra

We will have more climbing today than any other day, and we start with an incline on a paved road, curling around the castle, until we reach the top of the hill. Here, we hit a dirt trail and begin a stunning section, traversing the side of the mountain, overlooking the mountains of Ras Al-Feid, Mount Safaha, and Gbour Wahdat. The jeep width dirt track crosses dry streams and then climbs to a higher elevation giving us our first glimpse of Petra, Wadi Musa, and the small town of Um Sayhoun, with Aaron’s Shrine barely visible in the distance on top of Jebel Haroun. Finish with a slightly technical descent to the entrance of Petra. Then we take a tarmac road to the entrance of Little Petra. We walk through and clamber up to a dining room with 2,000-year-old frescoes recently discovered in 2010. It is a short cycle from here to our Bedouin camp for the night. We are in tents with cots and shared facilities.

Then, you enter the Siq, exploring the ancient rock carved ruins of Facades Street, the theatre, and the court. After lunch, you explore on your own to discover some of the less visited monuments, such as the monastery, the Khubtha Mountain, and the High Place of sacrifice.

Day 6 : Rajif - Wadi Rum

On reaching the desert highway, we transfer to Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon. Cut into sandstone and granite rock, it is Jordan's largest Wadi. Scenes of Wadi Rum in “Lawrence of Arabia” kick-started Jordan's tourism industry, but you may also recognize it from “Red Planet” and “The Martian”. Check out our Q&As

  • Are airport transfers included in this tour?

Airport drop off service is included.

  • Is there any free time to explore places during the tour?

    As detailed in itinerary.

  • What is the fitness level required to do this tour?

This tour is classed as SPORT. Let’s get technical! Sport rides cover mixed terrain from farmland to forest, steppe to stony riverbed, and beyond. Longer distances mean much of the day can be spent admiring the view from the saddle, or standing out of it on some sweeping descents! Expect some climbs, obstacles, and lots of fun. Experience off-road riding is recommended.

Aim to ride, or exercise, two to three times a week to keep up fitness. On the weekend, hit the trails for a few hours at a time to keep your handling skills fresh and to increase stamina. Ability to ride most Blue or S1 trails and singletrack should prepare you well for a ride with some short, steep climbs and descents and small obstacles.

  • Is there a supplement for solo travellers?

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for traveling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveler of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is US$ 400.

  • Are flights included in this tour?

Domestic and International flights are not included.

  • Do you require a visa for this holiday?

A passport with a validity of at least six months and a visa are required for entry into Jordan. We require all clients to purchase the Jordan Wanderer Pass online prior to arrival. This pass includes your visa-on-arrival fee and entrance to 40 attractions, including Petra. The Jordan Wanderer Pass can be purchased here for around USD 100. Make sure to get your pass well in advance and please print it out to show at immigration (you'll also need to show it at the attractions).

  • Are the local guides on the tour English speaking?

Yes, Local English speaking guide on this tour.

  • What is the maximum group size?

The max group size is 16 peoples.

  • Do I need to have travel insurance?

Yes! SpiceRoads insists that all clients must take out good travel insurance before joining one of our tours. There are inherent risks involved in cycling and mountain biking and we will not be liable for your medical expenses or evacuation in case of an accident. This insurance must include adequate coverage for any personal accident, medical expenses, injury, death and repatriation. Insurance should also provide coverage for cancellations or curtailment of the holiday. Clients should also ensure that there are no exclusion clauses limiting protection for any dangerous or unusual activities that might be included in their tour. If you join the tour without adequate insurance you may be disallowed from continuing on the tour without the right of refund. Clients are solely responsible for arranging their insurance and they should ensure that they are covered for the full duration of their tour. Your tour leader will ask for copies of your insurance before allowing you to join the tour. This protects both you and us.

  • Is the trip guaranteed to depart and does it require a minimum number of people?

There is a minimum number of participants (usually 2) required to enable the trip to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to Depart'. Once a trip is guaranteed to depart you are free to book your flights and make other travel arrangements. If the trip status is ‘Limited’ will mean we have only a small number of spaces available for booking. If you are unsure about the trip status, please contact us.

  • Why hire a bike from SpiceRoads?

SpiceRoads bikes are never just "fit for duty" but a key component of our riders’ tour experience and satisfaction. For tours with bike hire option, renting one of our bikes saves hassle, not to mention precious luggage allowance. All SpiceRoads tours use well-known makes of mountain, hybrid or road bikes (depending on the tour) with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes or disc brakes and Shimano components. Mountain bikes all have front suspension. We renew bikes in our fleet every two seasons. When in use, our bikes are well-cared for, including full service before each trip and daily cleaning while on tour. SpiceRoads tour support vehicles carry plenty of spares and extra tubes for every emergency.

  • Do you have E-Bikes?

Electric "pedal assist" e-bikes are available on select tours. E-bikes can help manage long distances and climbing terrain through the use of a pedal-activated electric motor. Unlike other e-bikes, "pedal assistedr" e-bikes feel more natural to the rider. We recommend e-bikes for riders interested in tours that might normally be too challenging for them, or for groups of riders with mixed ability. E-bikes provide assistance for long distance or more challenging terrain, but they can’t do all the work for you! Always chose a tour within the range of your own abilities to ensure your own enjoyment when exploring a new destination. Contact us for a complete list of e-bike available tours.

  • What do I need to bring if I rent a SpiceRoads bike?

Bikes rented for tours always come with a helmet, a single water bottle cage, and a standard saddle. If you prefer to bring your own saddle (just the saddle, not the seat post), additional water bottle cage, or SPD pedals, we will fit them to your bike for the tour. Don’t forgot to bring your shoes and cleats if you bring SPD pedals! Women specific seats are recommended for longer tours. We have a limited supply of gel seat covers to soften the ride, and of strap-on toe cages. Please enquire about adding these during your booking.

  • Do you have details of the SpiceRoads fleet?

In Thailand we have a fleet of Verve city bikes, TREK 4300 and X-Caliber 7 mountain bikes, TREK 7.2 X, FX 3 and 7200 hybrid bikes and Trek 2.1 C, Domane 2.0, Lexa SL and carbon Émonda S5 road bikes. We also carry Giant 2019 Explore E+ 3 e-bikes. Our bicycles are available in sizes ranging from 13 inches to 22 1/2 inches or 47 cm to 62 cm. Please note that a certain frame model is not guaranteed. In Bangkok and Chiang Mai, baby seats, tag-alongs, and child bikes for children are available. In Bangkok the single-wheeled tag-along bike attach to the seat-post of an adult bike, allowing a child to pedal along behind the adult. There's no age limit to the tag-along bike, but there is a 36 kg weight limit. Bike hire is include in the tour price for short tours, while longer tours offer bike hire as a supplement, as many riders opt to bring their own bike for our cycling tours. Depending on the destination, length of tour, and type of bike, hire costs vary.

The combination of guides was the best collection of logistical skills, country and biking knowledge, tour leadership and friendship that I have encountered on an 'activity package holiday' - and I have tried most of them! Outstanding in every way. We had the most memorable week of cycling and sightseeing. Thank you.
