Tour Overview

This Thailand bicycle tour will provide a unique insight into the life and traditions of Thais and the beautiful southern coast. We cycle off the main roads as much as possible, so we can explore long stretches of beaches, the beautiful island of Koh Talu, and scenic areas around Koh Kho Khao and Khao Lak. We have a true Thai experience when we venture off the beaten track, staying overnight at a traditional fishing community with a family. We meet in Bangkok and transfer to quiet roads to begin our tour with a glimpse at a traditional way of life along canals. From the floating market, we take our first boat trip and see wooden houses from water level. From here, we head south to explore the beautiful coastal provinces on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, visiting friendly fishing villages on our leisurely cycle. We ride through the stunning mountain scenery of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, take a speed boat to the tranquil island of Koh Talu where snorkeling in the crystal clear water is possible right from the beach, spend the evening with a fisherman to catch squid, and boat through a mangrove. We end our cycling on the coast of the Andaman Sea in Khao Lak, where the beaches are seemingly endless. Cycling Thailand’s coastline, we discover more about the history, culture, scenery, and of course the beaches of this beautiful country. We cycle 325 kilometres in 10 cycling days exploring beaches, waterfalls, jungles, and fishing villages, overnighting on beautiful islands. We enjoy some time off the bike, so we can take in boat rides, wildlife, and islands. The cycling is on a mixture of tarmac and dirt roads, mostly on flat terrain. We designed the route for those who wish to see the rural Thai countryside and the rich history of Thailand, all while enjoying an active holiday. We ride off the main roads as much as possible, so we can explore long stretches of beaches, the beautiful island of Ko Talu, and scenic areas around Koh Kho Khao and Khao Lak. We have a true Thai experience when we spend an afternoon with a traditional fishing community. The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks and fresh fruit.

This eye-opening boat ride offers a glimpse into Thailand of old, where local people are going about their daily life with the canal as the focal point. Then, we start riding into coconut plantations and fruit orchards along quiet backroads. We visit interesting temples, such as the quirky Wat Bang Kung, held up by a huge banyan tree, and the exceptional carved panels of Wat Bang Kae Noi. We visit the park’s headquarters on the edge of a large reservoir and enjoy the views and cool breezes. We ride along the lake’s shoreline and across an impressive dam before heading inland along trails and quiet country roads. We stop often in this tranquil area to take in the wonderful views and give you time to take photos. There are some small hills but nothing too strenuous or taxing. From our table, we'll have a perfect view over the vineyard where the New Latitude grapes are grown - Colombard, Chenin Blanc, Muscat, Shiraz, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo. Wine is not included in our lunch, but there are tasting sets for those who want to try Thai wine. After lunch, we get back on the bikes and take a back road that alternates between dirt, gravel, and tarmac to Wat Huay Mongkol, where a famous monk is revered. We start our ride at a temple where we ready our bikes for a very flat ride past fishing villages, schools, temples, and many coconut plantations. Following a windy road that offers some shade, we soon find ourselves among shrimp farms. We weave through the town of Praknam Pran and see squid drying on racks at the fish market. We ride past Khao Kalok, a large rock that separates one bay from another, numerous resorts, and, if the wind is right, a kite surfer or two. After entering Sam Roi Yot (300 hundred peaks) National Park, known for numerous caves, beaches, and limestone cliffs. We ride to the base of Phraya Nakhon Cave, where we have lunch. For those enthusiastic enough, there's a climb up to the two caverns which are unique in that they are naturally illuminated due to a collapsed roof. In 1890, King Rama V visited the cave and built a royal pavilion that became the symbol of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. We then hop in the van to miss a busy section of highway to our next seaside resort. rt.

Wake up to the sounds of birds chirping at the resort surrounded by jungle. We transfer about one hour to the old city of Takuapa, which once was a flourishing trade port known by Indians and Arabs back in the 17th century. Tin used to be the major export that brought wealth to the city, and what remains are the merchant houses built in Chino-Portuguese style. We have a leisurely cycle through the town and then ride on to visit the beachside Tsunami Memorial at Ban Nam Khem and the big fishing boat that was carried an amazing 2 km inland by the surging waters. Smaller boats were also deposited nearby, particularly in a pond we’ll pass. We have an early arrival, so you can enjoy the beach as well as the pool and spa at our resort, built in typical Thai architecture style. We'll have dinner on the beach tonight.

Moderate trips have more variety in day to day riding, and can include a longer or more challenging climbing day or two. Road conditions may be rough or hard-packed dirt, but with no off-road or technical sections. Cycling experience and good fitness are strongly recommended. To prepare yourself, aim to ride twice a week, with a long ride on the weekend so that you’ll be comfortable riding for several hours at a time. • Why hire a bike from SpiceRoads?

SpiceRoads bikes are never just "fit for duty" but a key component of our riders’ tour experience and satisfaction. For tours with bike hire option, renting one of our bikes saves hassle, not to mention precious luggage allowance. All SpiceRoads tours use well-known makes of mountain, hybrid or road bikes (depending on the tour) with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes or disc brakes and Shimano components. Mountain bikes all have front suspension. We renew bikes in our fleet every two seasons. When in use, our bikes are well-cared for, including full service before each trip and daily cleaning while on tour. SpiceRoads tour support vehicles carry plenty of spares and extra tubes for every emergency.

  • Do you have E-Bikes?

Electric "pedal assist" e-bikes are available on select tours. E-bikes can help manage long distances and climbing terrain through the use of a pedal-activated electric motor. Unlike other e-bikes, "pedal assistedr" e-bikes feel more natural to the rider. We recommend e-bikes for riders interested in tours that might normally be too challenging for them, or for groups of riders with mixed ability. E-bikes provide assistance for long distance or more challenging terrain, but they can’t do all the work for you! Always chose a tour within the range of your own abilities to ensure your own enjoyment when exploring a new destination. Contact us for a complete list of e-bike available tours.

  • What do I need to bring if I rent a SpiceRoads bike?

Bikes rented for tours always come with a helmet, a single water bottle cage, and a standard saddle. If you prefer to bring your own saddle (just the saddle, not the seat post), additional water bottle cage, or SPD pedals, we will fit them to your bike for the tour. Don’t forgot to bring your shoes and cleats if you bring SPD pedals! Women specific seats are recommended for longer tours. We have a limited supply of gel seat covers to soften the ride, and of strap-on toe cages. Please enquire about adding these during your booking.

  • Do you have details of the SpiceRoads fleet?

In Thailand we have a fleet of Verve city bikes, TREK 4300 and X-Caliber 7 mountain bikes, TREK 7.2 X, FX 3 and 7200 hybrid bikes and Trek 2.1 C, Domane 2.0, Lexa SL and carbon Émonda S5 road bikes. We also carry Giant 2019 Explore E+ 3 e-bikes. Our bicycles are available in sizes ranging from 13 inches to 22 1/2 inches or 47 cm to 62 cm. Please note that a certain frame model is not guaranteed. In Bangkok and Chiang Mai, baby seats, tag-alongs, and child bikes for children are available. In Bangkok the single-wheeled tag-along bike attach to the seat-post of an adult bike, allowing a child to pedal along behind the adult. There's no age limit to the tag-along bike, but there is a 36 kg weight limit. Bike hire is include in the tour price for short tours, while longer tours offer bike hire as a supplement, as many riders opt to bring their own bike for our cycling tours. Depending on the destination, length of tour, and type of bike, hire costs vary.

Amazing Experience

20-Feb-2020

I just completed an 11-day cycling trip from Bangkok to Phuket and must say that it was an amazing experience. I greatly appreciated the natural beauty of the country (beaches, waterfalls, plantations, mountains, jungles) however the real attractions were my fellow riders and the SpiceRoads staff. There were 10 riders who hailed from Canada (me), the UK and the US. We had a great time on the bikes as well as over the spectacular Thai meals and the occasional Singha ;) Our guides, Mr. Korn and Mr. Bird as well as our drivers made the trip particularly special for us. Everything was extremely well organized: the routes, the meals, the resorts, the breaks. We never felt unsafe, neither on the bikes or off.
