Fantastic rock formations drop vertically into the sea; sub-tropical vegetation on the hillsides, together with colorful Mediterranean flora, create bewitching landscapes. Stop for a visit in the seaside cathedral town of Amalfi on the Bay of Salerno, with its many medieval antiquities. Continue winding through vine-draped hills to Ravello, a “terrace over the sea” known for its dramatic villas; its panoramic views of the coast offer a picture-perfect backdrop for a lunch of local specialties. Day 3 : A guided tour of Pompeii and on to Rome

Location: Rome

The doomed city lay undisturbed for more than 1,700 years, until excavations began in the 18th century and are still in progress today. Most Italy vacations include a visit to Pompeii – but with Tauck, a walk through the ruins of Pompeii with a local expert provides a special connection as you learn what life was like in Italy in the 1st century AD. Arrive late afternoon in Rome, where you’ll spend the next three nights.

This after-hours visit means you'll avoid the long lines and the usual crowds found earlier in the day; the experience is rich when you explore the treasures in the Vatican Museums at your own pace. See the Candelabra Gallery, Map Gallery, and the Tapestries; in the Sistine Chapel, gaze in amazement at Michelangelo's masterpiece ceiling – and be able to contemplate all that you see in quieter surroundings. It's a highlight that makes Classic Italy, Small Groups one of Tauck's most memorable Italian vacations... one that you'll remember forever.

The present-day hotel was created from two renovated villas dating to the 17th century – former homes to the Donini counts – whose guest rooms feature wood-beamed ceilings, canopy beds, period furniture, frescoes, drapery and exquisite fabrics; its warm hospitality, elegant decor and exquisite cuisine are reminiscent of the aristocratic country houses of centuries past. The town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant art and architecture. You’ll visit St. Francis Basilica, built by the people, which today houses some of Italy’s great 13th- and 14th-century frescoes, as well as the final resting place of Assisi’s beloved favorite son, the patron saint of animals. Reviews from travellers on this tour

One of the best trips we have taken with Tauck

14-Nov-2017

This trip exceeded my expectations. The hotels where centrally located and excellent. The touring was comprehensive and the local guides excellent. This tour was active but doable. Tauck used great restaurants and there was always enough good wine to go around. I took a coat and tie but never needed it. The Sistine chapel and the Vatican museum after hours tours.

Small group Italy

09-Jul-2018

Organization was fabulous. Saw so many sights. Knowledgeable guides. Really great synchronization between travel, guides, meals. All hotels did a great job. Yes we were busy but there was free time too which you could use for more exploring or rest. I would not travel with any other group. The private concert, private tour times.

Classic Italy is Great Overall Tour of Italy

27-Jun-2018

We took the Classic Italy small group tour in May. The weather was cloudy and rainy with pockets of sunshine, but that didn't impact our tour at all. This is an active agenda, with lots of walking, touring churches and museums, siteseeing, and eating! You definitely need comfortable shoes and casual, layered clothing. Everything! But specifically the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, driving through Tuscany, the after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, Cinque Terre, the gondola ride in Venice, and avoiding the crowds and lines.

Best first trip to Europe/Italy possible

02-May-2016

My husband, not a natural traveler, and I decided to take our first European trip ever to Italy. We chose Tauck Classic Italy Small Group tour and could not have had a more perfect experience if we tried. In fact, can't see how any other trip can ever measure up. Italy was wonderful, the people with us were wonderful and the weather was wonderful. Although the we really loved all the small towns we visited, ending up in Venice was thrilling!! Here we were in this iconic place, seeing all those scenes we've seen all our lives in books and movies. Staying right on the Grand Canal was certainly a plus, as we watched the water traffic while gathered on the terrace of the hotel.

The Best!!!!!!

21-Oct-2016

Our first experience with Tauck and we can't praise you enough! Your customer service extends far beyond five stars. We can't possibly tell you in this short space how much we appreciated Tauck and all that you delivered so we will have to write a letter! In the few short days since returning we have praised you to many only to hear the same! Without a doubt the private tour of the Sistine Chapel. But it was our tour guide that made it so very special. We could have seen the same thing with another guide and it would not have meant as much. The only one that topped him was our Tauck Director. Thank you Tauck for hiring such amazing people!

Another Outstanding Adsventure

07-Sep-2016

This was our 12th Tauck tour and our 3rd small group tour. As usual, everyone was very friendly and by the end of the second week we were like family. After two weeks it was hard to say good bye. But we are still connected, sending digital photo files and e-mails back and forth and talking about our next Tauck adventure. As usual Tauck had lots of special events, but we will never forget our after hours, private tour, (just the 25 of us) in the Sistine Chapel. It was wonderful! It is these special touches that Tauck adds that no other tour company matches, that makes their tours so wonderful. That is the reason we have already booked two more tours for 2017.

Classic Italy

27-Nov-2017

Best hotels and restaurants. Above and beyond expectations. Our tour guide took care of us like we were family. She is one incredible person. My girlfriend contracted a cold. She went to a pharmacy and got just what my girlfriend needed. I left 2 pants and 2 shirts in a hotel and she saw to it I got them back. Being in the Sistine Chapel for our after hours tour.

Small Groups Classic Italy

18-Sep-2015

Group of 25 covered ages 9-90; friendly, easy to talk to and dine with. Logistics of the trip were very well laid out. Hotels and restaurants were much better than I could have chosen on my own. Trip itinerary hit all the key spots. I was concerned about amount of free time but it was a welcome respite. Lots of walking! Visiting the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel after hours. What a wonderful perk of this trip! Also seeing David and the gondola ride.

Trip of a Lifetime

10-Oct-2018

It was AMAZING. My life dream has been to go to Italy, and Tauck provided an experience that exceeded my expectations. From the minute we met our tour director, until we said our final good-bye, every experience was memorable. Our tour director was superb. She worked hard to insure we would have an unforgettable trip, and it was. While in Florence, we came around the corner and the beautiful Duomo reflected in the afternoon sunlight. It took my breathe away.

Italy

21-Jul-2017

The small group tour of Italy was phenomenal. We had a great time. The tour was very thought out by Tauck. The tour group leader was delightful, informative and awesome. We felt very taken care of. The sights were perfect. The only criticism was the food. Overall it was good. Some of the restaurants and food choices were just not good. The most memorable moments were in Cinque Terre. I loved that little village and the final dinner which was bitter sweet. We had a great tour made friends and now we had to leave.
