Alternatively, a local guide leads you on a walking tour of Montmartre, Paris’ historic hilltop district – a 19th- and early 20th-century Belle Époque haven for many of the world's famed artists, home to the Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur and a still-thriving arts scene today.

Day 6: Auvers-Sur-Oise & Vincent Van Gogh

Location: Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Accommodation Name: ms Sapphire

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

With your riverboat docked in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, drive to the town of Auvers-sur-Oise, where Vincent van Gogh spent his last days. The town has hardly changed since, so you’ll be able to recognize scenes from his paintings, including the view of the town hall, seen from the upper window of his room at the inn. You can also visit his room, No. 5 at the Auberge Ravoux, which has never been rented since he died in 1890. This afternoon, sail for Vernon, enjoying a Tauck Director lecture in the lounge en route; arrive in Vernon after dinner.

Day 7: Monet's Giverny & An Evening At A Château

Location: Vernon, France

Accommodation Name: ms Sapphire

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leave your riverboat for a visit to Giverny and Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s house and exquisite gardens. Personally designed by the artist as subjects for his paintings, Monet's gardens have been restored and maintained as he originally intended – complete with the Japanese bridge, the pond of water lilies, and exotic flora – so that you’ll feel like you’ve entered a Monet landscape. While in Giverny, you can also explore the Impressionist Museum at your leisure. After lunch aboard ship, spend the afternoon exploring Vernon as you please – it’s a fabulous place for walks. Smaller towns and villages are home to a wealth of cultural treasures, and offer you the chance to immerse in daily life; half-timbered houses, and wrought-iron shop signs line cobblestone streets that retain their Middle Ages character. If you choose, set off on a bicycle trip from Vernon to Giverny before returning to your riverboat for an art lecture discussing the work of impressionist artists! This evening, you’ll visit Château Bizy, “the Versailles of Normandy” that was once home to Louis XV, for a Tauck Exclusive reception and dinner with music in a setting of Baroque splendor.

Day 8: Medieval Rouen

Location: Rouen, France

Accommodation Name: ms Sapphire

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, cruise to Rouen, which Victor Hugo called “the city of a hundred bell towers." Once the prosperous medieval capital of Normandy, Rouen still bristles with spires and entices with Gothic churches, impeccably restored half-timbered houses, and picturesque cobblestone lanes. Joan of Arc was tried and burned at the stake here in 1431 and her presence is immortalized everywhere in monuments, churches, and even in chocolate-almond confections called “Joan of Arc’s tears.” On a walking tour you’ll see the Notre Dame Cathedral that inspired artists and writers, the Astronomical Clock, the Château Rouen, and the Saint Joan Tower. Enjoy free time to explore the city’s historic center on your own before returning to the riverboat. This evening, join us for a private tour and evening of dinner and music at Château du Taillis, set on a parkland estate in Duclair; built in 1530, the exquisite Italian Renaissance château with baroque interiors is a brilliant architectural showcase.

Day 9: Étretat & Honfleur Or Caen & Bayeux

Location: Étretat, France, Honfleur, France

Accommodation Name: ms Sapphire

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You have a choice of sightseeing today on France's Normandy coast – between excursions to Étretat and Honfleur, or Caen and Bayeux. On the first choice, head to Étretat on the Alabaster Coast, where sheer white cliffs plunge to the blue sea, and the elements have carved astonishing giant arches from the cliffside rock; take an orientation tour of the town, a magnet for artists in the 19th century, and visit the beach and the cliffs. Continue on to Honfleur, an old picturesque trading port where 17th-century houses line the harbor and cobblestone backstreets beckon – a favorite haunt of painters past (like Boudin, Courbet, Monet and Jongkind of the école de Honfleur, which gave rise to the Impressionist movement) and present – to explore as you please and have lunch. Or, in the port city of Caen – renowned for historic buildings from the reign of William the Conqueror, and for the heavy fighting that took place there after the WWII D-Day invasion – visit the Mémorial de Caen, with its Peace Museum and memorial gardens. Then it’s on to medieval Bayeux on the Aure River, where you’ll view the famous Tapisserie de Bayeux (Bayeux Tapestry), an 11th-century tapestry depicting the 1066 Norman invasion, and stop for lunch. Back aboard the riverboat, enjoy a lecture on D-Day by a local expert.

Day 10: Wwii History On The Beaches Of Normandy

Accommodation Name: ms Sapphire

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leave the ship in Le Havre for a tour of the beaches where World War II's pivotal D-Day landings occurred on June 6, 1944. See Omaha Beach and Pointe-du-Hoc, where American troops scaled sheer cliffs with ropes and fire ladders to reach enemy artillery batteries, and visit the American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, on a bluff overlooking the beach; the tranquil setting and its history will not fail to move you. Reboard your riverboat in Caudebec-en-Caux to continue your cruise; enjoy evening cocktails before dining onboard as you wish.

Day 11: Les Andelys, Cider & Calvados

Location: Les Andelys, France

Accommodation Name: ms Sapphire

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your riverboat arrives at Les Andelys, named for two fishing villages at a scenic bend in the river where the imposing ruins of Château Gaillard rise on a cliff. The castle was built in 1198 by Richard the Lionheart, Duke of Normandy, to defend against an invasion from the King of France. A marvel of engineering, the fortress was constructed in only a year, using thousands of workers; it was thought to be impervious, but fell after a siege in 1204. The ruins in their picturesque setting overlooking the Seine are still there to inspire, as they have generations of painters like Nicolas Poussin, as you explore the grounds on a guided visit. Next, ramble in the classic twin French villages below, with their medieval lanes, colorful half-timbered houses and gardens. Travel a short distance from town to visit a ciderhouse (another Tauck Exclusive) to learn how the many variations of Norman apple cider – and Calvados, an apple brandy renowned in this region – are made... and of course enjoy a tasting of both. Return to the riverboat and cruise to Paris; tonight, join the Captain for a farewell reception followed by dinner.

Day 12: Journey Home

Location: Paris, France

Meals Included: Breakfast

Tour ends: Paris, France. Fly home anytime. Transfers are included directly from the riverboat to Charles de Gaulle Airport, Gare de Lyon Station, Charles de Gaulle Station and Gare du Nord. You should allow 3 hours for flight check-in at the airport.

Reviews from Travellers on this Tour

A Wonderful experience

17-Aug-2017

From the moment the trip started to the last good bye, there was nothing to not like about this trip. The entire crew was always there to help or pour more wine, fill your water glass and keep the bread basket full. Nothing was too difficult for the entire staff. Each stop brought another tour guide who was outstanding. The cemetery at Omaha Beach. Tauck was ready with roses and rocks, to honor the dead. Ending at the ballroom where the treaty of Versailles was signed.

Outstanding Moments

07-Jun-2017

It started outstanding just staying at the Savoy, London. This was the beginning of meeting some wonderful travelers and hearing their experiences with Tauck. Meeting our tour director sure made me feel comfortable that we were going to see Paris with someone who lived there and could speak the language. The Monet gardens. It is hard to describe how beautiful the grounds were and why he could paint just wonderful scenes from these grounds.

Walking Into History

06-Aug-2018

We always enjoy a Tauck trip! The TDs, the tour group guides, this time the MS Sapphire personnel, and especially the fellow travelers are all special people and we enjoy meeting, talking, and sharing experiences with them. This trip was a walk into history over cobblestone streets and old worn out stairs, be warned. I loved the early entrance to Monet's garden in Giverny. The flowers were in colorful bloom. My husband enjoyed the early access to the Chateau de Versailles and the ability to see so much before the crowds. We both agree that the tour guides were excellent, knowledgeable and entertaining.

London and Seine cruise

15-May-2017

We had a wonderful time and loved all the care given by your employees. The Tauck Directors couldn't have been nicer. What I didn't expect was the friendliness, helpfulness and kindness of your staff. The hotel manager was sensational, always smiling and anxious to assist. The Croatian cuties were delightful. The beach at Normandy. I would have liked an extra day in that area. Much to see there and not enough time t t

Tauck went above and beyond for us

14-Sep-2018

We were on the London>Paris>Seine River cruise. The cruise directors and tour guides went above & beyond the expected to make sure we were happy after our Danube River Cruise was cancelled. They helped us reschedule flights, upgraded our cabin, and during the trip made sure my husband who has some walking issues was able to fully participate. Visiting Versailles before the public opening to experience the beautiful rooms without others around. Also, visiting Monet's Gardens before regular hours so that once again, we could enjoy the gardens w/out throngs of people around. This is why Tauck stands out from other tour companies. Finally viewing the Light Show at the Cathedral in Rouen.

London, Paris and Seine River

14-Jun-2016

Great trip. Only Tauck could make the trip great given the historic flooding in France. As usual, remarkable hotels, guides and Tauck tour directors are the best in the business!!! Normandy and the D-Day beaches.

Expectations exceeded!

11-Jul-2017

Although our first Tauck trip, what I knew about you gave me very high expectations. To say that my expectations were exceeded is an understatement of epic proportions! All the "big pieces"of the trip were wonderful. But it was the "small pieces" ~ excellent lecturers and local guides, unexpected treats, and unfailing kindness that amazed us. Having Monet's gardens virtually to ourselves was magical and unforgettable. Receiving a white rose to place on a grave at the American Cemetery added such meaning and poignancy. Clambering aboard the carousel in Honfleur to claim a horse to go round and round with other giddy, giggling grown-ups was delightful. And, there are many more! Thank you

Cruising the Seine & London-South

18-Jun-2018

The trip was a great experience, all around- typical of Tauck! The hotels were luxurious and well situated both, in London and Versailles. The MS Sapphire was a magnificent vessel, well appointed and the staff were all professional and so attentive. The extra Tauck touches were appreciated: on board lectures, access to sites early, great guides. The Normandy beaches were very moving. Wished we had more time there! Could have skipped the lunch. Wish there had been more excursion options in London. We did take an extra day there and did several of the sites on our own, but there were so many more that we could have seen. Loved getting access to Giverny and Versailles before open to public

Loving London and Paris

14-Sep-2018

There were so many high points about Cruising the Seine plus Versailles, Paris and London. The Tauck exclusives that are most appreciated to me was: The presentation by the Granddaughter of Winston Churchill First Class train accommodations to Paris. Early admission to Monet's garden Early admission to the Versailles Palace There were too many to mention but I think the trip to the Normandy D-day beaches stand out. It is hard to forget those events that changed the war even though it is almost 75 years ago. I appreciated going to the War museum in Paris first so as to tie some events together.

A bit of a let down

10-Nov-2015

We were on our 2nd part of 2 Tauck trips, Our first one was through Italy with Tinalini, we were on such a high from the great experience we had we just wanted the momentum and energy to keep going. This was our first Tauck ever and assumed that they were all this good. Got to London, and energy fell hard, our guide fell asleep on the bus to ship. Meeting one of our guides, she is so sweet and in the right position. Moments can only be made with good guides such as her.
