Drive the scenic Black Forest into the foothills of the Alps en route to a private visit and lunch at the Neus Schloss Meersburg ("New Castle in Meersburg"), a historic 18th-century former bishop's castle overlooking Lake Constance, now home to several museums. Continue on to the beautiful fairy-tale landscapes of Neuschwanstein, where the imagination is inspired by green meadows, dark forests and crystal clear blue lakes.

Day 6: Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau And On To Munich

Location: Oberammergau, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today begins with a privately guided visit to one of the most recognizable castles in Europe – and perhaps the world – Neuschwanstein. The castle was designed as a place of retreat by Ludwig II, who escaped into a dream world – the poetic world of the Middle Ages; it was inspired by the operas of Richard Wagner, to whom the king dedicated the castle. And in turn, Neuschwanstein inspired the imagination of Walt Disney and the castle of "Sleeping Beauty." Then you're off to the village of Oberammergau; enjoy a walking tour with a local guide (including a visit to the venue of the Passion Play), followed by some free time to explore as you please. Along with the Passion Play, the village is also renowned for its tradition of skilled woodcarving and the charming lüftimalerei (frescoes) that decorate many homes, depicting scenes from Bavarian folktales. Depart Oberammergau and head to the legendary city of Munich, arriving early evening.

Day 7: A Day In Munich

Location: Munich, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast

Upon arrival, take a sightseeing tour of the Bavarian capital that includes the celebrated Maximilianstrasse, the 17th-century Residenz, and the old town hall. Explore more of Munich at your leisure this afternoon, or join us for a poignant to Dachau; this evening is free to spend as you please in Munich.

Day 8: Rothenburg On The Romantic Road

Location: Rothenburg, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Today, you'll visit the medieval town of Rothenburg, on Germany's legendary "Romantic Road." A walking tour with your local guide reveals Rothenburg's renowned Gothic cathedral, cobblestone streets and gabled houses that have remained much the same over the centuries. You'll have a free evening in Rothenburg tonight to explore on your own and have dinner as you please in town.

Day 9: "Horseless Carriages" In Rothenburg, Then On To Dresden

Location: Dresden, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Depart Rothenburg, and then travel in style aboard old-timer Aaglander cars – “horseless carriages," complete with lunch and sparkling wine – before continuing on to Dresden. You'll stay in Dresden at an 18th-century palace, rebuilt in all its splendor as a luxury hotel, in the heart of the city’s historic center.

Day 10: Baroque Art In The City Of Dresden

Location: Dresden, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast

Your journey continues today with a guided sightseeing tour of the city of Dresden. Before World War II, Dresden was known as The Jewel Box for its magnificent art treasures and Baroque architecture. Heavily bombed during the war, much of the city’s former glory has since been restored, including the Royal Palace, whose museum, dating back to the 1720s, displays some 4,000 works of art. Tauck’s private tour through the New Green Vault takes in Renaissance and Classicist treasures, including jeweled gems of gold, silver, ivory and mother of pearl. The afternoon and evening are free to explore on your own.

Day 11: Dresden At Leisure & On To Berlin

Location: Berlin, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Spend the morning as you please in Dresden, exploring the city's museums and enjoying lunch at leisure, then travel to Berlin for a three-night stay at a five-star hotel in the heart of the German capital, overlooking the Gendarmenmarkt Square in the city's historic Mitte district. Have dinner at leisure at your hotel this evening.

Day 12: A Day Well Spent In Germany's Capital City, Berlin

Location: Berlin, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast

Join our local guide for a tour of remarkable Berlin, capital of a reunified Germany. View the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral) and the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral); Unter den Linden Boulevard; Brandenburg Gate; the Reichstag; and Checkpoint Charlie, the controversial crossing point between the former East and West Berlins during the Cold War era. The remainder of the day is free to explore Berlin as you please.

Day 13: Your Choice Of Treasures In Berlin

Location: Berlin, Germany

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Set off for Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island), not far from your hotel. This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses five museums and priceless cultural treasures that will astonish even the most seasoned museum visitor! You have your choice of guided visits at several museums today; your pass includes an audio guide for the museums of your choice. Then join us for a private cruise on the Spree river. Later, you'll have some time to explore more of Berlin as you like, perhaps sampling one of the locals’ favorite foods, currywurst, a dish so tasty and emblematic of Berlin that there’s a museum devoted to it. If you’re curious to see a remaining section of the Berlin Wall, you might go to the East Side Gallery, a stretch of wall inventively painted by commissioned artists after reunification to commemorate that momentous occasion. Please join us this evening for a farewell reception at the hotel followed by dinner at the trendy rooftop restaurant atop the German Bundestag (the restored Parliament building)... the views are spectacular!

Romanic Germany a Great Trip!

26-Sep-2016

We had a great and memorable trip to Germany. The trip was well organized and the Tauck guide was excellent. Highlights of the trip included a cruise down the Rhine, beautiful castles, great local guides, delicious food and wonderful museums. The hotels were excellent with great locations. The tour of Dachau Concentration Camp.

The trip was outstanding. Every aspect of the trip from the initial greeting, the transportation, the places we stayed, and the sights and experiences provided. The stay at the Medieval Heidelberg in the Black Forest

Excellent Germany tour

04-Jun-2015

Excellent tour of Germany from Frankfurt, through Garmisch, Munich, and ending in Berlin. As usual with Tauck: excellent hotels, food, tour director, local tour guides and bus driver. Very enjoyable, educational tour. Most memorable moment I found was seeing area in Berlin where wall had once separated East from West Berlin.

Great vacation, Lots of history and beauty

22-Jul-2016

First, our tour guide was wonderful. If you get her for your guide, you will be lucky. Next, we loved every single hotel, the food was great at every meal Tauck provided, and the destinations were amazing. My favorite things: The Rhine River Cruise, the hotel and spa Traube Tonbach and the area around it, and Oberammergau. Dachau. It was the most memorable afternoon of my tour. It has haunted me for weeks, but it was important for me to go. I am so glad I went, but it will stick with me for a very long time.

Romantic Germany

06-Aug-2015

The tour was fantastic and lived up to all our expectations of Tauck Tours. The tour director and bus driver were excellent. We had great local guides supplementing the directors vast knowledge of German history, culture and current affairs. We met some wonderful fellow travelers from Australia, Russia, UK as well as a cross section of Americana Our visit to Heidelberg.

Our First Tauck Tour was First-Rate

02-Jul-2015

Romantic Germany is delight-filled with the right combination of urban destinations and rural beauty. The history is incredible - we learned so much! Our tour director and driver were wonderful, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone. The hotels were top notch, the food amazing, and the small group was great way to get to know other travelers. Traube Tonbach was incredible - their service should be an international standard. We especially enjoyed Dresden and Munich where we had fabulous local guides. Of course the farewell dinner on top of the Bundestadt in Berlin was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Our memories of ""Romantic Germany"

04-Jun-2015

Our trip was great from beginning to end. Our Tauck tour director and our tour bus driver were terrific. We could not have asked for better. All our hotel accommodations along the way were top notch. Every local tour guide we had was great too. We both agree we know so much more about the history and people of Germany now. Our time in Rothenburg during their "Master Draught Festival", but in reality there were several memorable moments.

Romantic Germany - perfect way to get the flavor of this beautiful country

10-Oct-2016

Perfect way to experience the varying countryside, small towns, big cities and great people. The hotels and food were excellent - an unexpected perk. The time in the Black Forest - wish we could have stayed there another day. Also, Munich was wonderful.

The Best of Germany

07-Sep-2017

We had never been on a Tauck tour before. Small groups are the answer. We had a Tauck Director who was fluent in German and his history of the area made our trip even more meaningful. Plus met wonderful people. Thought the variety of sights was so good--from castles to medieval towns to first class hotels. Driver was great--and Reichstag in Berlin dinner fab.!! Meersburg--town and luncheon. Also Reichstag dinner. Took a hike in the Black Forest--best ever!!

Romantic Germany

24-Jun-2016

Our guide was fantastic. I would start the trip in Munich and have four nights there with a day trip to castles and Oberammergau, one night Rothenburg, three nights Prague, two in Dresden, and four in Berlin. From Dresden to Berlin I would drive through Leipzig and Wittenberg in route to Berlin. Did not care for Frankfurt and Black Forest Loved Munich, but needed more time there. Our guide was amazing. Also liked Dresden, a real treat. Our guide there was great. Also liked Berlin, especially the historical portions and museums. Bought Berlin Philharmonic tickets and loved the performance. Disappointed that we were prevented from walking to Neuschwantstein.
