Buzzing with futuristic technology and skyscrapers, this fast-paced city has a slower side too coupled with a rich history. We’ll stop at the moated Imperial Palace Plaza surrounded by lovely gardens, before passing the modern commercial district on our way to Sensō-ji Temple. This striking red temple dedicated to a Buddhist deity, Kannon, is Tokyo’s oldest.
Hungry after a busy morning, we’ll eat lunch like the locals from a Bento box, followed by a spot of shopping in Tokyo’s colourful and atmospheric open-air market - Ameyoko. We end our day in Hamarikyu Gardens, a tranquil oasis amid a bustling forest of skyscrapers.

Day 4

Hakone
Hakone, Japan
Hakone

Location: Hakone, Owakudani Valley, Mount Fuji, Lake Ashi

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Southwest of Tokyo is Hakone. Its tranquil crater lakes, snow-capped peaks and soothing onsen might lead you to forget that it’s a place forged by the drama of a volcano. We’ll drive to the Owakudani Valley to see at first hand its steaming rivers and bubbling hot springs and get a bird’s-eye view of the area from the Hakone Ropeway, a cable car that takes us from Owakudani to Sounzan. If the weather allows, you’ll get views of Mount Fuji too.
From small puzzle boxes to coasters and trays, the mosaic inlay woodwork technique of yosegi-zaiku marquetry is a delicate process. It originated here in the Hakone mountains in the Edo period, and we’ll get to experience some of the skills required to produce such charming items.
We’ll then follow in the footsteps of ancestors on a guided walking tour along part of the Old Tōkaidō Road, a trail that once served as a route between Tokyo and Kyoto. Smoothed-stone pathways will take us towards deep blue Lake Ashi, breathing in the scent of towering cedars as we wander along an avenue of 370-year-old trees.

Day 6

Location: Nagano, Zenkō-ji Temple, Jigokudani Monkey Park

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

We pack overnight bags whilst our luggage is taken to Kyoto, as we’re whisked by bullet train to Nagano. On arrival, we’ll visit the 7th-century Zenkō-ji Temple, a site of pilgrimage and quiet place of contemplation within the city of Nagano. We’ll then head to Jigokudani Monkey Park to say hello to its famous residents, a troop of Japanese macaques who live totally at ease in the presence of visitors, whiling away their time in their very own onsen.
A treat awaits later as we get involved in oyaki making. These traditional flour buns stuffed with a variety of fillings are toasted on a hot iron pan then steamed - a tasty snack that’s crisp on the outside with a pillowy centre.

This route to Kyoto was established during Tokyo’s Edo period and provides a glimpse into a lesser-known side of Japan hidden within enchanting forest and countryside.
We bring ourselves back to the modern day and board the first of two train journeys, to Kyoto via Nagoya.

Today promises some real highlights and we’ll start at Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO-listed temple nestled into the Kyoto hills. Founded in 780, close to the tumbling cascades of a waterfall, the name translates as ‘pure water temple’ and from its 13m-high stage we’ll gaze across woodland below. We’ll also stroll along Ninenzaka, an ancient stone road lined with traditional buildings.
Kyoto is the birthplace of the traditional tea ceremony and we’ll enjoy a refreshing first-hand experience in this graceful discipline. A visit to the Gion district next, an area of Kyoto famous for one of Japan’s most iconic sights - the stunning secretive geisha. To become a geisha, young women must first spend time as an apprentice (maiko), and we’ll take lunch today accompanied by their enchanting dance and conversation.
Imagine a temple that glows in the sun, it’s top two floors covered in gold leaf. This is Kinkaku-ji and we’ll visit this beautiful building in its spectacular setting.

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

We’ll head south of Osaka to the small town of Koyasan on Mount Kōya, the country’s spiritual heart and centre of Shingon Buddhism. We’ll first visit Kongōbu-ji Temple, with rooms lined by gilded and delicately painted sliding doors (fusuma). The temple is protected by the largest rock garden in Japan, representing a pair of dragons emerging from a sea of clouds.
After a busy morning, a delicious lunch awaits of traditional Buddhist cuisine - shojin ryori - a vegetarian dining style using seasonal vegetables and simple presentation.
We’ll finish the day with a breathtaking visit to Japan’s largest graveyard. Set deep in an ancient forest, the UNESCO-listed Okunoin Cemetery is a 2km spectacle of tombstones, statues and the graves of at least 20,000 monks.

Day 12

Location: Himeji Castle, Takamatsu, Ritsurin Garden

Arriving in Takamatsu, we’ll have a fun lesson in udon noodle making, from creating the dough to rolling and cutting into strips - you’ll be all set for making your own back home! The rest of the afternoon will be spent in the tranquillity of historic Ritsurin Garden’s lakes, bridges and scented flowers - it’s a place of contemplation that’s been here since the late 16th century.

Day 13

Location: Naoshima

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

We visit Japan’s unique art island, Naoshima, for a tour of fascinating art installations, including Benesse House. This contemporary art museum with indoor and outdoor displays will have you wandering the grounds seeking out different works - you’ll easily spot the bright yellow spotted pumpkin. We’ll also stroll around older preserved areas of the island, Art House projects and Miyaura Port.

After a stroll around historic riverside Kurashiki, we’ll head to Saijo for a tasting experience of sake rice wine, Japan’s national drink. Sake from Saijo is recognised as some of the best. We’ll continue to Hiroshima.

Its people mark it with honour, respect and to promote peace. We’ll take a tour and then experience its great food culture, making our own okonomiyaki - a delicious savoury pancake and a local speciality. After learning some tips and tricks, we’ll be sure to taste them.
A poignant guided walking tour follows, through Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Museum. An area of green space that now serves as a memorial to all the victims of the world's first atomic bomb.

Day 16

Location: Beppu, Aso

Accommodation Name: Ryokan

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Packing our overnight bags for two nights whilst our luggage is taken to Nagasaki, we board a bullet train and express train to Kyushu Island. On arrival in Beppu, we’ll join a hell tour and despite the name we’re in for a mesmerising afternoon. Beppu is known for its hot springs and onsen, but some of its hot springs are not for bathing. Known as hells (jigoku) they’re spectacular steaming ponds, bubbling pools of mud and volcanic mineral mixtures that create unexpected colours of blue and red, giving rise to names such as sea hell and blood pond hell.
We continue to Aso and check in to our hotel, where we’ll stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan-style room and futon beds, with time to relax in the hotel’s onsen. We’ll spend the evening enjoying a traditional kaiseki dinner.

We visit Suizenji Garden where we can return to the Old Tōkaidō Road in miniature form - the gardens here reproduce the 53 post stations found along the road, complete with Mount Fuji. After a stop to view the hilltop Kumamoto Castle, we’ll head to our hotel and check in before an orientation walk around Kumamoto stopping at Kumamoto Food Village.

Day 18

Location: Nagasaki, Dejima, Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Three days after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Nagasaki was also bombed, but the city defiantly promotes peace too and is today a vibrant port city with many international influences - some centuries old. We reach Nagasaki by ferry and visit the man-made island of Dejima. Built in the 17th century and a former Dutch trading station, there are charming historical buildings to see, including houses, warehouses and gates. Next we’ll spend some time at the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, then the rest of the day is free.

Day 19

Location: Nagasaki

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

We’ll spend a sombre morning at the Nagasaki Peace Park and its Memorial Museum. There are places for reflection or places to gain further knowledge on the events of 1945.
Later, we’ll continue to Glover Garden. Foreign merchants settled in Nagasaki in the 19th century and it’s a serene open-air museum of their relocated mansions, including the home of the Scottish merchant Thomas Glover who settled here in 1859.
We’ll also visit Ōura Church, built in 1864 and thought to be the oldest Christian church in Japan.
The afternoon is free.

Day 20

Location: Dazaifu, Fukuoka, Kyushu National Museum, Fukuoka Tower

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

From the 7th century, historic Dazaifu was the centre of administration for Kyushu. Now a quieter city on the edge of Fukuoka, it’s home to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine - a sanctuary for learning, culture and the arts, where students hang good luck (ema) charms. 6,000 plum trees bloom in February and March in a breathtaking display.
From historic temples to futuristic modern structures, the huge glass Kyushu National Museum is a short walk away. Through the interactive exhibits, we'll learn more on Japanese culture and history.
We’ll head to Fukuoka for a guided walking tour in the city’s entertainment district, Nakasu, before heading for the skies at Fukuoka Tower to see the city from its 123-metre-high observation deck.

Recently returned from the great...

08-Apr-2024

Recently returned from the great Indian rail journey. My wife and I could hardly believe the value for money. From pick ups from Durham to Heathrow and back,to the number of coach and train journeys , quality hotels, great choice of food throughout and our first night in Heathrow Hilton. What really made our trip a success was our guide, Prashant, who managed a party of twenty four very varied, sometimes a little unpredictable travellers with ease.Nothing was too much trouble for him and as a group we gelled and warmed to Prashant as he kept us safe, well informed and a little entertained by his mix of authority and humanity.Where do I begin with the tour itself ? India,a country of extremes.Poverty,wealth,order,chaos.Sometimes bleak, often breathtakingly beautiful. The people, the cities, art, architecture, flaura and fauna.Delhi,Jaipur, Amritsar,Agra, Ranthambore, Chandigarh and the icing on the cake that is Shimla. An absolute masterclass of man versus nature, the railway and buildings are an unbelievable feat, but wait until you see the dual carriageway being built on the mountainside.🤯I could go on for a very long time but I'll just post some photos. Thanks to Titan, thanks to the excellent Prashant and and a massive thanks to the other twenty two travellers who helped shape our holiday of a lifetime.🏁💜

Not merely a holiday, rather a memorable experience

29-Dec-2022

I have used other travel operators; this was the 1st time of touring with Titan----Israel, The Holy Land, from being collected from home and returned at the end of the holiday this was an unforgettable experience; the Tour Manager, a PhD Archaeology made the whole tour so interesting, he enlightened us throughout each day from an historical, archeological and Biblical viewpoint, bringing each site we visited come to life, and went over and above his remit escorting us for evening trips around the local area; thanks also to our very patient driver who coped with the very busy traffic; our hotels were good, professional and pleasant staff and really good food; I would recommend Titan to anyone looking for a fascinating tour with excellent efficient service thank you Titan nor just for a holiday for a memorable experience

We had a fantastic holiday...

26-May-2023

We had a fantastic holiday in Mississippi. Right from our chauffeur driven car picking us up to the return journey, we had a great time. The first hotel The Gaylord was amazing, absolutely huge, first class. The second The Double tree in Memphis unfortunately wasn't, the hotel was tired and very basic, the only plus was where it is situated in the centre of town, we were only there two nights so it wasn't to bad. The American Queen Steam Boat was first class all the way, thoroughly enjoyed the seven nights sailing down the Mississippi. The last hotel the Sheraton New Orleans was very comfortable too. Our guide throughout our time away was Laura Tuttle. she was amazing, very knowledgeable, and helpful. We also had a coach driver Guil, who went over and beyond to give you the best time. Other coach guides included Jim,who was so funny, and also very knowledgeably. Very entertaining throughout. The entire itinerary itinerary was very well thought out, included a huge variety of visits to different Interesting locations. Highly recommend using Titan for all your holiday destinations.

Review on “Cairo, Alexandra and...

26-Feb-2025

Review on “Cairo, Alexandra and a Nile Cruise" – 11 nights with Titan / Saga. 13-02-25 Overall the trip went very well, good journey from home with a car picking me up & transporting me from Cumbria to Heathrow & an adequate flight to Cairo with Egypt-Air. Met by our Tour Manager on arrival & transferred to our hotel. Hotel Swiss Inn Pyramids Resort was good Included Tours of The Pyramids & Alexandria were adequate Internal Transfer to Luxor was OK Our ship, The Nile Plaza was wonderful & the cruise fantastic with wonderful food, decent cabins & excellent staff. The included trips were well organised The flight home was OK with nice car & driver to take me back home. Pro’s Professional Tour Manager & knowledgeable Egyptologist for the duration of the trip. Decent hotel Excellent Nile Cruise ship serving fantastic food and excellent facilities including massage provided by very provisional masseur / masseuse Con’s Cairo hotel poorly located in October 5th City Scheduled trips often rearranged to generate time for optional extra money ones Optional trips sold at very high prices 3 unscheduled time consuming trips, an Alabaster outlet, an essential oils outlet & a Papyrus outlet – Prices in all 3 were exorbitantly high. Tour Manager & Egyptologist Tip expectation level of $60 / $80 each per person from a group of 35 – Even at the lower figure the tip alone (Without commission from the outlets & optional tours etc) works out at almost the ANNUAL salary of a Civil Engineer – Source https://www.timedoctor.com/blog/average-salary-in-egypt/ Overall summery Overall the trip offers excellent value for money, especially the pick-up & return home by car (Only one diversion to collect a couple en-route, total journey 8 hours Cumbria to Heathrow including stops) The trips included in the package were excellent as were the Hotel & Nile Cruiser. The group size of 35 was somewhat high but I’ll probably use Titan / Saga again &, with certain caveats as mentioned above, recommend them.

THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!!...

03-Feb-2024

THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!! (Dreadful) Avoid Titan and Saga at all costs. False descriptions of the tour and dreadful administration Returned to the UK last evening with a great sigh of relief after the worst holiday ever. 1. No block booking of airplane seats by Titan. (Husband and I sat apart on the long, overnight flight) 2. Unable to pre-book seats as Titan reference numbers did not coincide with anything. 3. Husband and I not sat together on any of the train journeys! In fact, on one occasion I was sat, alone on a sleeper carriage, a couple of carriages away from the rest of the group who were scattered over two or three carriages. Terrifying as a female to be sat alone in the midst of noisy locals!!!!! (Eventually the guide, Rahi, did come to rescue me and found a seat near the main group) 4. The guide, Rahi, would usually get off the coach and begin walking off without waiting for all the group to disembark the coach. (Spot the guide in the crowd!) 5. The guide, Rahi, refused to use any identifying prop such as a flag, hat, jacket or umbrella. Frightening to be in the manic crowds of Delhi and other crowded places to be unable to see the guide. 6. NO AUDIO HEADSET system on any excursion 7. The guide, Rahi, didn’t face the whole group, but stood sideways on and was unable to be heard by the majority. 8. OUTRAGEOUS behaviour by the guide when he enquired as to the whereabouts of my husband, whom I explained was in bed with an upset stomach and was feeling unwell. Rahi DID A REVERSE AIR PUNCH😳😳. This was in response to an earlier conversation when my husband had complained about our separate seating arrangements. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL 9. When we arrived at Heathrow to find our aircraft seats were not allocated, we were advised to speak to our guide on arrival at Delhi. Rahi merely shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn’t do anything. 10. Tour pace incorrect - gruelling pace and only half a day relaxation due to the guide, Rahi, throwing in visits to shops and factories fie him to earn his commission as I head him tell another!!!!!!! 11. When off loaded the return flight due to illness, we were unable to get in contact with Titan/Saga. Left in Delhi without an hotel or flight!!! Found accommodation but didn’t remove shoes or clothes due to the poor standard. Final summary: Poor, disappointing, inefficient, incompetent, misleading, misrepresentations, are just a few words to describe.

Luxury VIP door to door travel! I don't think so....Titan sent a Toyota Prius uber to Stanstead for a return journey to Newport, S Wales. 4 adults plus luggage! the experience was anything but luxurious. Contacted Titan on the return journey and since return. They simply didn't seem interested and offered us a £300 travel discount off a future trip! After a lot of emails they converted it to a £300 cash refund. Give it a lot of thought before booking !
