Tour Overview
From summit to the sea, this once-in-a-lifetime tour gives us a window onto two of the most astounding landscapes on the planet - the mirror-image lakes and snow-topped spires of the Canadian Rockies, and the frozen glaciers and ice-carved fjords of Alaska. Extreme scenery combined with exclusive comfort - we travel from Jasper to Vancouver aboard the glass-domed carriages of Rocky Mountaineer, switching to cabins on board Holland America Line’s Koningsdam for a seven-night cruise along the Alaskan Coast. Looking out for breaching whales, circling bald eagles and lumbering bears along the way.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your flight to Calgary.
Day 2
Canada’s third largest city is coolly cosmopolitan, with a small-town cowboy feel. After a quick tour, we get on the road - driving across the prairies and into the rugged frosty peaks and pine-fringed teal lakes of the Canadian Rockies.
Canada’s first national park - and some might argue the original and the best - we get to appreciate the size and splendour of Banff National Park sooner rather than later. Switching to cable car, we soar high above the alpine valley floor to the summit of Sulphur Mountain - so called for the hot springs at its base. Afterwards, we continue to Banff town - a lively little resort town with snow globe good looks. You’re then free to explore Banff’s alpine charms, après ski style restaurants and outdoor shops.
Day 3
This morning we take a scenic drive around Banff, leaving the afternoon at leisure or to join optional excursions to explore more of the pristine and dramatic beauty of UNESCO-listed Banff National Park.
Day 4
Canada’s most iconic and evocative image, we drive to the ‘Jewel of the Rockies’ to photograph the mirror-image mountain peaks reflected in Lake Louise’s glassy turquoise waters.
Back on the road, we start our journey along the Icefields Parkway - a 230km highway that runs parallel with the Continental Divide and connects the two great national parks of the Rockies, Banff and Jasper. Punctuated by luminous lakes, evergreen forests and churning waterfalls, this is one of the most jaw-dropping drives in the world. Home to over 100 glaciers, we transfer to an Ice Explorer all-terrain vehicle to drive across the surface of the mighty Athabasca Glacier - a 12,000-year-old ice field.
A small town surrounded by epic wilderness landscapes, Jasper is the jumping off point for Rocky Mountain trails and rapid-filled rivers of its namesake national park.
Day 5
Today is at leisure to explore more of Jasper or join optional excursions to experience this UNESCO-listed national park.
Day 6
One of the most famous train journeys in the world, this morning we roll out of Jasper on board the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer. Looking out for bald eagles overheard and giant elk on the passing riverbanks, we traverse the Rocky Mountains - flanked on all sides by deep green ravines, snow-dusted ridges and brilliant blue rivers. As the Canadian Rockies retreat behind us, the scenery gives way to a changing landscape of cascading mountain-fed waterfalls, red-rock hoodoos and historic ranchlands. Pulling into the peaceful riverside city of Kamloops this evening, we disembark and transfer to our hotel.
Day 7
Reboarding Rocky Mountaineer, we wind our way west - with surprising desert-like river canyons morphing into fertile green farmlands and coastal rainforests. A day of epic changing landscapes and epicurean delights, eating and drinking is a big part of our Rocky Mountaineer experience with chef-prepared meal and drinks included.
Rolling into Vancouver, we disembark and transfer to our hotel. The evening is free to explore.
Day 8
With the green running trails of Stanley Park and boat-dotted waterfront giving way to a backdrop of glittering glass towers and circling snow-flecked mountains, Vancouver is naturally stunning. Regularly wearing the crown as the most liveable city in the world, we discover why on a city tour this morning.
Waving goodbye to dry land, this afternoon we board our ship bound for Alaska. Few places afford access to such raw natural beauty and rare wildlife as Alaska. Carved by giants, with overflowing glaciers, mist-cloaked fjords and forested national parks bigger than most countries - the only way to grasp the size and undiluted beauty of Alaska is from the ocean.
Day 9
One of the most scenic sea lanes in the world, we sail between the steep rainforested cliffs of Canada’s Inside Passage. The waters are calm and sheltered, so keep watch for whales and seals breaking the smooth glassy surface, and brown bears skirting the rocky shoreline.
Day 10
Look out for bears in the temperate forests and seals on the floating ice floes as we sail towards Juneau, the stunningly located state capital of Alaska. Lined with colourful clapperboard houses and hemmed by cloud-covered forests, Juneau is the perfect place to wander and get a taste for the slower pace of life in America’s 49th state. There are also optional excursions available to take a whale-watching trip, pan for gold or visit the Mendenhall Glacier.
Day 11
Made famous during the Klondike gold rush, today Skagway showcases buildings dating from the gold rush era. It’s also the access point for the White Pass and Yukon Railroad, a fascinating journey through some of the state’s most ruggedly beautiful terrain.
Day 12
A UNESCO site that’s home to more than 1,000 glaciers, the frozen world of Glacier Bay National Park is home too, to once-in-a-lifetime moments. The moment a humpback whale breaches the ice-peppered water, or the stillness is broken by the creaking of a glacier before sheets of ice plunge into the icy waters (ice calving and is both a sight and sound to behold).
Day 13
A spiritual land cloaked in Native Alaskan nations traditions; the human history of Alaska is just as important to understand as the natural history. On top of being picture-postcard beautiful with a rainbow of stilted-wooden waterfront houses, Alaska’s ‘First City’ of Ketchikan is one of the best places to learn about Native Alaskan culture. A highlight is visiting the intricately carved totems at Totem Bight State Historical Park.
Day 14
We start our journey south back to Vancouver, cruising back through the Inside Passage on the lookout for more wildlife.
Day 15
We wake up in Vancouver, with some free time to explore the city’s cosmopolitan charms and reflect on our incredible journey before transferring to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK.
Day 16
Upon arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
