Accommodation: Udai Kothi or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we'll drive west to Khempur, stopping off at Chittorgarh, the colossal fort that most represents the doomed idea of Rajput chivalry. Chittorgarh was attacked and taken by Muslim invaders on three separate occasions and always with the same result; Jauhar being declared - and while the men donned the saffron robes of martyrdom and rode out to certain death - the women consigned themselves to the flames on a huge funeral pyre. This afternoon we then stop for a late lunch at the Real Exotic Marigold Hotel AKA Ravla Khempur. Don't worry, although not super luxurious this charming converted palace hotel is a wonderfully quirky property that takes you into the world portrayed in the film. Starting before sunrise, we will witness the fisherfolk hard at work at the docks as the fresh catch is brought in, before continuing on to see hundreds of illiterate vendors sort through the different newspapers which are then distributed across the city. From here we visit a number of morning markets, including the colourful and fragrant flower market, which is always a highlight. These early hours of the day provide a fascinating insight into the communities and cultures of Mumbai and offer a wonderful contrast to the usual touring experiences. After breakfast and a rest, this afternoon we will then take a walking tour of the Dharavi slum, the heart of small-scale industry in Mumbai. As we wander through 'India's largest slum' we will witness a wide range of business enterprises and activities, from recycling and pottery-making, to embroidery and leather tanning. People from all over India live in Dharavi, making it a cultural melting pot, and a tour through its narrow alleys is quite an adventure. More recently Dharavi has become a focus of artists from all over the world, who in collaboration with the locals have painted murals on the walls of houses, and as we explore Dharavi it’s worth looking out for the abundant street art which the local community is very proud of. After the tour there will be some free time before catching our overnight train this evening.

Climbing the narrow stairs brings you out onto the whispering gallery, where secrets whispered into the wall are carried across the dome to listening ears. Also in this sleepy town is the beautiful Ibrahim Rouza, which is considered by many to be one of the most finely-proportioned Islamic monuments in India.

Day 18: Vijayapura (Bijapur) - Badami

Accommodation: Badami Heritage or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we drive south to Badami. This afternoon we then visit the Chalukya dynasty's wonderful 5th century temples at Aihole and the UNESCO site of Pattadakal. Aihole is situated in a quaint village where the main attraction is the unusual horse shoe-shaped Durga temple which is perhaps one of the finest temples in the region. Time permitting, we’ll visit the wonderful Archaeological Museum near Durga temple, which houses some of the finest stone sculptures from the 6th century onwards. From here we move on to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pattadakal, perhaps one of India’s most impressive Hindu complexes and home to nine temple shrines.

Day 19: Badami - Hampi

Accommodation: Boulders Hampi or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast we visit the famous Badami cave temples and Agastya Lake, an artificial lake decorated with an array of temples and cave sculptures including the Bhutanatha Temples. The Badami cave temples are set in a ravine at the foot of a rugged red sandstone outcrop surrounding the lake. These cave temples form a complex of Hindu, Jain and possibly Buddhist cave temples and are considered some of the finest examples of Indian rock-cut architecture, especially Badami Chalukya architecture, which dates back to the 6th century. This morning we arrive in Mysore, the stunning cultural capital of the Karnataka region, located at the base of the Chamundi Hills. Heading straight to our hotel, we have a little time to relax before an afternoon visit to the nearby town of Somanathapura, famed as the site of the 13th century Chennakesava Temple. Considered one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture in India, the temple was built at the height of the Hoysala Empire and is richly carved with friezes, sculptures and intricate images from the Indian epics.

Day 23: Mysore

Accommodation: Royal Orchid Metropole Hotel or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Long known for its festivals and palaces, Mysore can boast one of the most opulent and iconic buildings in southern India, the stunningly ornate Mysore Palace. Originally built in the 14th century, the palace of today is the result of a significant redesign by the British architect, Henry Irwin. A wonderful fusion of European and Indian influences, the palace is still the official residence of the Wodeyar dynasty, the royal family of Mysore. We take a walking tour around the city this morning, visiting the palace and the markets before driving out to the hills that surround the city. The Chamundi Hills are home to the impressive Sri Chamundeswari Temple and the sacred Nandi bull, one of the largest of its kind and carved from a single piece of rock. We’ll also stop off at the nearby impressive Srirangapatnam with its 18th century remains of Tipu Sultan’s fort, palace and mausoleum.

Day 24: Mysore - Bandipur National Park

Accommodation: The Serai Bandipur or similar

Today’s journey takes us on to Bandipur National Park, one of India's best-known reserves and another of the country's important Project Tiger reserves. Situated in the Chamarajangar district of southern Karnataka, the park stretches across some 874 square kilometres and provides shelter for a number of India's most endangered species including gaurs, sloth bears, tigers and four-horned antelope. This afternoon, once we have settled into our rooms, there will be the chance to head out and explore some of the area, either with walks or to a nearby temple.

Day 25: Bandipur National Park

Accommodation: The Serai Bandipur or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The cool of the early morning and late afternoon offers an ideal time to search out game, when the predators rise from the slumbers of the day in search of water and fresh prey. On two games drives today we will venture deep into the park in open-topped jeeps, in the company of experienced naturalist guides. We search amongst the landscapes of one of India's best-known protected areas in search of the growing numbers of Bengal tigers, elephants, bison, sloth bears and wild dogs. Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and together with the adjoining Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagarhole and Mudumalai National Park, it forms one of the largest protected areas in Southern India. With a diverse habitat and a thriving mammal population, this park offers a wonderful wildlife viewing experience. As well as its game, Bandipur National Park is also home to over 200 species of birds including honey buzzards, Indian vultures, bee-eaters, crested serpent eagles and a whole array of kingfishers.

Day 26: Bandipur National Park - Ooty

Accommodation: Taj Savoy or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we will drive on to the town of Ooty, a once popular hill station set amongst the Nilgiri Hills. Located in the heart of lofty mountains and dense forest, the town used to be a popular getaway for the British of the colonial Raj and still retains some reminders of its genteel past. Ooty remains as popular today as it did during the years of the British Raj. This afternoon we can visit the botanical gardens as well as some of the main 19th century buildings, including the Ooty Club, where the game of snooker is said to have been invented.

Day 27: Ooty - Coonoor - Pollachi

Accommodation: Coco Lagoon or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. Running through the Western Ghats between Ooty and Coonoor, the railroad was built by the British in 1908 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Still operated by a fleet of steam locomotives, it offers a wonderful glimpse of a golden era of travel, as you spend part of the morning enjoying a sedate and spectacular journey through the lush hills and tea plantations aboard the famous 'Toy Train'. Upon arrival at Coonoor railway station, we transfer to Pollachi, where we can enjoy a village walk in the afternoon.

Day 28: Pollachi - Munnar

Accommodation: Chandy's Windy Woods or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we drive to the beautiful hill station of Munnar, famous for its plantations and scenic beauty. After settling in we will get the chance to explore a local tea plantation. The lush landscapes of the Western Ghats provide ideal conditions for the sprawling tea plantations that flourish amongst the verdant foothills. A tour of a local tea plantation presents a chance to learn a little something about an industry that can date its cultivation in India back over 300 years.

Day 29: Munnar

Accommodation: Chandy's Windy Woods or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we will explore on foot through the beautiful Letchmi hills. Our walk will bring us through tea plantations, patches of Shola forest and grasslands as well as treating us to views of Idukki Dam, the highest arch dam in Asia, and Anaimudi, the highest peak in South India. We should hopefully spot exotic species and endemic birds of the Western Ghats, part of one of the world’s Biodiversity hotspots and we can enjoy a picturesque picnic along the way. Driving back to Munnar we have the option of visiting a tea museum or the Srishti employment project.

Day 30 : Days 30 - 31: Munnar - Alleppey (Backwaters)

Accommodation: Houseboat

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we drive to Alleppey to take to the waters of this most beautiful and unique of landscapes. Boarding our traditional houseboats, we will spend the next two days cruising the waterways and channels that honeycomb the coastal plains running parallel to the Arabian Sea. A unique ecosystem that is home to a rich variety of aquatic life, the backwaters present us with a time-honoured image of an India long forgotten, where scattered villages survive amongst the labyrinthine channels much as they have for generations. Kettuvallams (Keralan houseboats) once negotiated these canals carrying rice, grain and even royalty through the backwaters. Today they provide us with an ideal way to appreciate the tranquillity and tradition of this part of southern India. We’ll pass isolated communities and gardens of hibiscus and vegetables, hop off the boats to visit interesting sights en route, and spend our evenings moored up besides the lapping shores of these idyllic backwaters. Having two nights aboard our private chartered houseboats enables us to venture further into the backwaters to catch a glimpse of life rarely seen by foreign visitors to Kerala.

Day 32: Alleppey (Backwaters) - Kochi

Accommodation: Xandari Harbour or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Disembarking our boats this morning, we drive to Kochi, the glittering ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. Here we will take a walking tour around the historic old streets of Fort Cochin and the red-tiled riverfront of Mattancherry, once the old capital’s main market area and the centre of the Malabar spice trade. The city is also famous for its Chinese fishing nets, as well as the Santa Cruz Basilica and the Church of St. Francis, where the body of Vasco de Gama was held before being returned to Portugal. Made from teak and bamboo, the huge cantilevered nets are a legacy of some of the earliest visitors to the Malabar Coast, whilst the 16th century Church of St. Francis has the distinction of being the oldest European church in India.

Day 33: Kochi

Accommodation: Xandari Harbour or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

The oldest European settlement in India, Kochi is a vibrant mix of Arab, Chinese, European and Indian influences and home to the oldest church and synagogue in the country. Built on trade, the city began to prosper with the arrival of Jewish and Arab traders. With the later arrival of the Portuguese, and then the Dutch and English, Kochi went on to become a vibrant settlement, incorporating a rare fusion of European and Asian traditions and styles. Today will be free to enjoy some last minute retail therapy or explore at leisure, then we will enjoy a remarkable performance of Kerala's famous Kathakali dancing before our final dinner together tonight, with a chance to reflect on our journey and experiences.

Following an assessment by both Wild Frontiers and our local partners we are confident that your trip is able to run in both a safe and enjoyable manner.*****

** If you were originally booked to travel before 30 April 2020 and transferred to a later date, or if you have a tailor-made booking, there may be some irrecoverable costs which we cannot refund. Please speak to us and we will be able to advise you if this is the case for your booking.
***Since our HQ is in London, Covid Viable status for our Group Tours will be assessed on UK-based travellers. However we are fully aware that many of our clients live in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. As such, when we deem a trip to now be Covid Viable, everyone booked will have a chance to review their own personal situation before deciding whether or not to remain booked on the trip. Anyone wishing to, will have the option to transfer without fees to another trip at this time. For tailor made bookings, we may also able to consider additional countries’ travel advice when deciding if a trip is Viable. Please discuss this with us at the time of booking.
**** This relates to bookings from UK clients only. We may operate trips to destinations which the British FCDO advise against travel for Covid reasons. If this is the case, anyone wishing to will have the option to cancel with a refund or transfer to another trip. In some cases we may choose to offer a tour to a Red destination but these will be at both clients’ and Wild Frontiers’ discretion and will be subject to alternative conditions to be discussed on an ad hoc basis.
*****If a destination, that we have deemed to be Covid Viable, subsequently fails any aspect of the criteria for two consecutive weeks, you will have the right under our Covid Promise to transfer without any fees.
