Day 1: London (England)

Location: London

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Dinner

Big Ben. Buses. Buckingham Palace. Welcome to London (especially if your names starts with B). An iconic city to kick off one legendary Euro adventure – makes sense. This evening we’ll meet the small bunch of trip mates who’ll be sharing the ride, before tucking into our first included group dinner. Get ready: the adventure starts NOW.

Day 2: London – Paris (France)

Location: London, Paris

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Shake a leg – we’re hitting the road early to jump across the English Channel. The home of Coco Chanel, the Mona Lisa and world’s craziest roundabout – Paris deserves its rep as the European capital for all things culture, haute couture and drool-worthy food. Get to know the City of Lights better with a driving tour. And for dinner? The choice is yours, but your Trip Leader’s got all the hot tips – just ask. Bon appétit!

Day 3: Paris

Location: Paris

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Yep, you’re finally here – so, this is your day to do whatever YOU want. Create a solid dent in your bucket list with a visit to the Louvre (book your tickets in advance!) and the Musée d'Orsay. Snap a pic of the Arc de Triomphe. Wander the Champs Elysées. Or discover the hidden gems down romantic backstreets on your own. Walking not your thing? Stretch out those legs on an optional bike tour. Later, jump aboard an optional river cruise down the Seine or dress to impress for an optional cabaret show.

Day 4: Paris – Swiss Alps (Switzerland)

Location: Paris, Swiss Alps

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

From cityscapes to landscapes, today we’re off to the Swiss Alps! Warm up those vocal cords, we’ll be busting out some bangers on the ride into the mountains. Cue the fairytale villages of your imagination – the oh-so-quaint Engelberg is where we'll be spending the night. Tonight, we’ll get stuck into a group dinner before heading to the hotel bar or relaxing in the fresh alpine air. You do you: that’s what it’s all about.

Day 5: Swiss Alps

Location: Swiss Alps

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Another free day to do some serious exploring. Hiking. Biking. Thrill-seeking. Cheese-eating (unless you’re lactose intolerant). You could take the revolving gondola to the top of Mt Titlis for all the epic views (without the effort), then head back down in search of the world's best hot chocolate. Or sit back and enjoy a cold beer back at the hotel. Your Trip Leader’s got all the recs, but how you spend today is 110% up to you.

Day 6: Swiss Alps – Pisa (Italy) – Florence

Location: Swiss Alps, Pisa, Florence

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Buy that mini-fondue set for mum. Down your coffee. And wave goodbye to Switzerland – we’re off to the land of the long boot. Get your creative juices flowing for THAT photo at Pisa, then make your food baby sing as we roll into the birthplace of gelato: Florence. Tonight, is your chance to tuck into some of that hearty Tuscan cuisine you’ve been dreaming about – plus a scoop (or two) of the good stuff. Challenge: decide on your favourite flavour in two days. We bet you can’t.

Day 7: Florence

Location: Florence

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Florence has more stories than Bilbo Baggins, more culture than a London hipster AND it gave the world David (the statue, not your 9th grade boyfriend). We’ll get the lay of the land on an in-depth walking tour with a local guide, feat. a bonus leather-making demo (a real craft here). Then: take your new-found knowledge and hit the streets solo. Uffizi Gallery. Ponte Vecchio. Piazza della Signoria. The Duomo. You can’t see it all, but you sure as hell can try! We’ve got an included group dinner on the cards tonight – so go easy on gelato. Or don’t.

Day 8: Florence – Orvieto – Rome

Location: Florence, Orvieto, Rome

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Southward and downward with a pit stop at the hilltop town of Orvieto to see the grand cathedral and dig into a wild boar panini. Trust us, it’s good. Then: bella Roma awaits! Dump your stuff at the hotel and prepare for a walking tour to end all walking tours. We’ll pass by the Pantheon, throw our two cents in the Trevi Fountain, (don’t) sit on the Spanish Steps and check out the mighty Colosseum – getting the scoop on allllllll the ancient history as we go. Tonight, you're in Disneyland for foodies. Go get it.

Day 9: Rome

Location: Rome

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Time to live out your Lizzie McGuire Movie fantasies – today is all about Vespas, espresso, two-cheeked kisses and pizza (the way it’s supposed to taste). There’s an optional guided tour of Vatican City on the cards, if that’s your thing. Or how about a tour that hits three awesome hot spots – Palatine Hill, Roman Forum and Colosseum? Topdeck rec alert! See. It. All. with the optional Rome in a day tour. You’ll tick off iconic bucket-list sights AND learn heaps about this beaut city. Feeling something a bit more relaxed? Do as the locals do and indulge in a little dolce far niente (delicious idleness) at a local cafe or piazza. Tonight, shake out those fat pants for round two. Thought you’d tried all the gelato flavours? Head to Fatamorgana – and think again.

Day 10: Rome – Venice

Location: Rome, Venice

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today, we’ll say ciao to Rome and ciao to Venice. Italians – confusing, right? After checking in at the hotel, it’s time to see what all the fuss is about. Acquaint yourself with the who's who of Venice's usual suspects on a walking tour – ticking off the likes of St Mark's Square, Doges Palace and Accademia Bridge. And then – this beautiful floating (sinking) city is yours for the taking. Our suggestion? Enjoy a spritz overlooking one of Venice’s fuchsia-pink sunsets. This is your moment.

Day 11: Venice

Location: Venice

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Centuries old architecture. Inventive cuisine. And a bucket-load of culture. Venice is just begging to be explored. After an included gondola ride along the Grand Canal, you’ve got the whole day to do just that. Need suggestions? Insider tip: spend some time seeking out the epic Libreria Acqua Alta bookshop or head off the tourist trail with a trip to Guidecca Island. Go wandering. Chat to the locals. Get lost in the maze of canals and piazzas. That’s what makes the memories.

Day 12: Venice – Austrian Alps (Austria)

Location: Venice, Austrian Alps / Haus Kienreich

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Order one last coffee in poor Italian (hey, you tried!) and prepare yourself for some I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E scenery as we make our way to the Austrian Alps. So much more than schnitzel, strudel and The Sound of Music, this thrill-seekers’ paradise should have been sponsored by GoPro. Then: take your pick from canyoning and tandem paragliding optional activities. Or just kick back and enjoy serenity. Swap stories of today’s thrills (and spills) over an included dinner with the group.

Day 13: Austrian Alps – Mauthausen – Prague (Czech Republic)

Location: Austrian Alps / Haus Kienreich, Mauthausen, Prague

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Ready to tick off our sixth country in two weeks? But first: a sobering visit to former concentration camp Mauthausen. Learn all about the atrocities that occurred here during WWII before we make tracks to the Republic of Czech (think: check). Our Trip Leader will help us get acquainted with this picture-perfect city – complete with a quirky clock tower – and point out all the must-dos for our free day tomorrow. Tonight? Time to hunt down some sma~ený sýr (fried cheese) for dinner before hitting the town to sample some of the local beer. It’d be rude not to.

Day 14: Prague

Location: Prague

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

That’s right folks – it’s your day, your way! Seek out the John Lennon wall. Soak up some history at the Communist Museum. Take the funicular up Petrin Hill for allll the views. Or grab a delish roast pork roll at one of the street vendors lining Old Town Square. Fancy yourself as a bit of a hops connoisseur? Don’t miss the beer tasting optional this afternoon. 11 different Czech beers + tapas = good times all around. And then? Wander the cobbled streets, catch a smooooth jazz performance on Charles Bridge, or kick back at your digs and let it all sink in.

Day 15: Prague – Dresden (Germany) – Berlin

Location: Prague, Dresden, Berlin

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

From one beer capital to the next. Get acquainted with 800 year-old Dresden – a city virtually destroyed in WWII and then rebuilt – before we make tracks to Berlin. Prep yourself for currywurst and more hipsters per capita than anywhere else. We'll drive you around to see the main sights including (what's left of) the Berlin Wall, Museum Island, the Holocaust Memorial and Alexanderplatz. Then: a group dinner at Berlin’s version of the Hofbräuhaus. Prost!

Day 16: Berlin

Location: Berlin

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

A city exploding with culture, history and bloody good food – you’ve got 24 hrs to make the most of it. Our advice? Opt in for a historic walking tour that’s, you know – not boring. Get a local insight into what the city was like under Nazi rule and tick off the likes of the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie and Brandenburg Gate. Or put that elastic waistband to the test on the ultimate Berlin food tour. We’re talking kebabs, pastries, more currywurst, pierogi and local Pilsner. Tonight, see if this city’s nightlife really lives up to the hype. Or just relax on a sunny terrace with a bevvie or two – Germany is the OG of beer gardens, after all.

Day 17: Berlin – Amsterdam (Netherlands)

Location: Berlin, Amsterdam

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Onwards! We’ve got our GPS set for Amsterdam today. Once we arrive, it’s time to hit the cobblestones and explore. Check out the likes of Dam Square, the Royal Palace and the National Monument. This place is a foodie’s wet dream, so you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to settle in for dinner. Get a taste for traditional Dutch pancakes (sweet/savoury/both at once) or head to the Foodhallen for alllll the world snacks. And later? Chill canalside at a local bar or brewery – Brouwerij 't IJ is the place to be for ultimate windmill vibes.

Day 18: Amsterdam

Location: Amsterdam

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

This is our last full day. So, don’t hang about – get on your bike! Check out Amsterdam's iconic canals, bridges and parks on an optional bike tour. Or for the culture fiends – delve a bit deeper with a visit to the Anne Frank House (make sure you book in advance!) or the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. Miss out on those Anne Frank tickets? Take part in her last walk instead. You’ll retrace her steps, hear her story and experience an impressive virtual reality of the Secret Annex where she hid alongside her family. Whatever you get up to, make sure you’re back in time to toast the final night of our Euro trip at tonight’s included dinner.

Day 19: Amsterdam – London (England)

Europe was of course amazing, no complaints there

Europe was of course amazing, no complaints there – amazing cities, incredible food and a lovely experience. The Topdeck tour, however, felt like it was designed to mess with us and ensure that no one ever did a tour with Topdeck again. There were three key issues: 1) the trip leader; 2) the impossible to follow itinerary; and 3) the quality and location of some of the hotels. 1 - The trip leader, Christian, had never done a tour with Topdeck before or this kind of tour and it really showed. He didn't really seem to understand his role and it felt like he thought he was doing us all a favour when he did the most basic of trip leader tasks. He refused to use the Topdeck app to communicate important info, and instead made everyone to download facebook so he could communicate via a facebook page and was snarky when people asked for clarification or information that he had already posted on there (even if he had forgotten to post it). Given that many people didn't have internet reception when they weren't in hotels (e.g. while on the bus) it was extremely unhelpful and as a group we were heavily reliant on each other for figuring out what was happening and when. The bus driver, Danny, also filled in a lot of the gaps when Christian failed to provide any info on where we needed to be and when. Instead of helping Danny out when things went wrong (e.g. the bus needed a spare part or traffic meant Danny needed to find a rest stop to comply with EU driver time laws), Christian left it to the tour participants to provide the support and assistance and often just slept through bus trips with his headphones on. He was also incredibly rude in chastising everyone for not being on time for getting back on the bus (even when it was because people were still waiting in toilet queues or had stomach problems) despite the fact that half the time it was him we were waiting for. Early in the trip he chastised us all for not being on time to the tower in Paris the night before, even though he hadn't told us any particular time to be there. Overall communication and planning was an utter mess - planning of activities was often left to the last minute so split second decisions had to be made about activities we had no detail on. We had to pay for all activities in cash, and didn’t always have the right currency if we on the way to that country and the tour leader wasn’t provided with change or a company credit card. Apparently the system meant that if someone opted in to an activity and pulled out, the tour leader would be financially liable and it would come out of his pocket. Activities were poorly timed and organised – e.g. the Paris bike tour group was told the wrong place to meet and then the bike tour had to be cut short so people could make it to the Seine cruise on time. We often regretted booking activities through topdeck and not just organising them ourselves. Christian took no responsibility for any errors and kept trying to pass the blame onto us as the tour participants, or Topdeck as a separate entity (despite people pointing out to him that he was our Topdeck rep and representing the company). 2 – The impossible to follow itinerary – I don’t know if other tours actually manage to get places on time and it was just a problem our tour had, but the way the itinerary is written and advertised sounds like you arrive in most cities mid-afternoon and have a chance to explore a bit before dinner. In most cases we arrived in cities in the evening and walking tours that were supposed to happen that day had to be postponed to the next day. We arrived in Austria too late, in part due to extreme traffic, so four people missed out on paragliding and the canyoning trip was changed to a shorter course. Apparently most groups leave for Austria an hour earlier than we did and Christian had been debating leaving another a whole hour later – it was unclear whether Topdeck had given Christian a clear schedule to follow or he was just told to wing it. It blew my mind that our trip leader was not legally allowed to give tours in Italy, despite guided tours with the trip leader being in the itinerary for Rome and Venice. It meant we had strange and tense half-***** tours where most info was delivered in strange alleyways, and seems like a major failing on the part of Topdeck. Overall the whole trip felt rushed with short pockets of time to explore cities and full days on the bus for sometimes 12-14 hours. We were never given a clear overview of what to expect in a day (the PDF wasn’t much help as scheduled activities rarely fit in on the travel days and it didn’t include timing), so generally we tried to piece things together ourselves and it always felt a little off balance like we were going to miss a deadline we weren’t told about. 3 – Quality and location of hotels – I just don’t even know where to start. It became a running joke among the group how terrible all the showers were – if you got a bathroom where the shower head was attached to the wall and the room didn’t flood while you showered, it was cause for celebration. Some of the hotels were surprisingly lovely (e.g. Austria), others were well below our already low expectations (e.g. Rome). The hotel in Florence very far out of town right by the airport. Several others were so far from city centres we had to take taxis to get anywhere – please include other transport costs in your budget. Public transport tickets were provided in a couple of cities, but they were usually 2x one-way trips worth provided on the second day in a city and often it was hard to coordinate collecting them from the tour leader. The fact that many hotels refused to give out two plastic key cards for rooms that were being shared by two people who had just met on the trip was absurd. The idea that people should have to coordinate their plans with their roommate was completely inappropriate. In Switzerland one guy couldn’t get into his room at 1am or so because his roommate had fallen asleep and the hotel reception wasn’t staffed. Christian chastised the guy who had fallen asleep and tried to get the whole bus to hate on him like that was an unreasonable thing to do in your own hotel room in the middle of the night. Christian was also very resistant to the idea that hotels ever give out two room keys and did little to advocate for us. Most of the double rooms booked were two single beds pushed together, which is largely fine, though one in Rome was two single beds with separate sheets and doonas and different height mattresses. The hotel claimed they didn’t have any double beds at all and then agreed that they just didn’t have any available and eventually put new sheets on the beds so they at least kind of functioned like one bed. Importantly, Danny the bus driver was great. He was lovely and absolutely went out of his way to make it a great trip for us all, provide info where it was lacking, and answer questions happily and without complaint.

Christian, our tour leader, had no idea. He would read a little script before giving a speal on a new town and sometimes that info was wrong. He slept and used the toilet all the time on the bus and sometimes it was up to us passengers to help the bus driver when a few things went wrong. Early on I asked Christian where it would be good to do washing on the trip ie convenient/reasonable priced. When in Switzerland after seeing the note in the room he told me it could be done there. This was only a couple days in, expensive and we all saw the note in our room. Similiarly from head office they overlooked a few things - training Chrisitian, having at least a few hotels along the way with close/reasonably priced laundry facilities. Most of the motels were terrible and not at all as advertised, sometimes quite a distance out of town so we needed public transport or taxi to get home which was expensive, only 1 key per room which was bad for travellers who had been partnered up, shower heads not attached to the walls, no shower screens/curtain, not terribly clean ect. There was no real thought from head office into how long travel actually takes and there was no time allowed if things happened eg accidents or traffic jams (which happened on multiple days). We were always late getting into a town (we had a great bus driver it wasn't his fault) this meant we didn't really get dinner in Paris as we had to dump our bags and get to the tower for the views, in Austria people missed out on the paragliding as we couldn't get there with enough time, in Amsterdam those going to the sex show got their keys first so they got dump their bags and go yet some still got left behind and just generally we were pushed and rushed on arrival in each city. Even though the itinery said we would arrive and explore the new city in the afternoon, we never got in before dinner time. We were rushed into a club in florence and all got angry and walked out as it was our first night in Italy and wanted to eat Italian, not American. This I believe was because he was friends with the owner of the club. The tour was way to rushed and not at all like it was marketed!!! I knew it would be a lot of travel and might be a bit rushed but nothing like what it was. I have done many tours and this was by far the worst.
